LACONIA — A controversial plan to build a girls’ summer camp and conference center for use by non-profits on a Paugus Bay island is now in the hands of a judge.Texas mortgage broker Scott Everett, who grew up in the Lakes Region, bought Big Island in 2012 with the goal of establishing a camp that would operate six to eight weeks each summer providing up to 40 girls at any one time the chance to enjoy life on the lake.As the 2.3-acre island is located in a residential single-family zone, Everett submitted plans to the Zoning Board of Adjustment seeking a special exception to build a 60-person conference center along with other facilities that would be used six to eight weeks annually for summer camp programing for girls ages 8-14.The development plans include remodeling the existing single-family home on the island into the director’s residence and infirmary with a bathhouse addition, building a dining/meeting building and constructing five “wooden tents,” four on elevated platforms supported by piers and one at ground level to make it handicapped accessible.
