A veteran police officer gunned down in the middle of the night on a dark Birmingham street was honored before thousands Saturday as a servant, a mentor, a humanitarian and a hero.More than 2,000 people gathered in Legacy Arena for an hours-long celebration of the life of slain Birmingham police Sgt. Wytasha “Wyt” Carter. There were tears, there was laughter, and lots of love for the 44-year-old husband, father, son, brother and uncle whose faith, passion and leadership emerged early in life and remained a constant until that life was cut short in the early-morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 13.“Though today I know is heavy and hearts are sad, you can lift your heads because he did not die in vain. He died doing what he loved, protecting others,’’ said the Rev. C. Michael Washington of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. “I consider Wyt a hero.
