Ferrari have made a mess of their decision to favour Sebastian Vettel over Charles Leclerc

For a race that was so hyped and celebrated, it delivered little. The so-called 1000th Grand Prix will not be remembered for very long. But that is Formula One. The finest races live long into the memory but the more humdrum and uneventful ones fade within a matter of weeks.  Still, the Chinese Grand Prix was not a race entirely without event or minor controversy. The biggest talking point is Ferrari’s team orders and the decision to instruct Charles Leclerc to let Sebastian Vettel pass in the early stages.  The driver hierarchy at Ferrari has been much-discussed coming into this race. A fortnight ago in Bahrain, the young and talented Leclerc was denied a fantastic first victory by an engine part failure.  Vettel, a four-time champion and Ferrari’s lead driver, made another critical error under pressure.  Before the season began, new team principal Mattia Binotto proclaimed that Ferrari would prioritise Vettel in 50-50 situations early on due to his experience and being the man “who has most probability to challenge for the title”.
