When God closes a door, he opens a window. Now one of our longest-serving MPs is retiring from the Commons, rumours are swirling that a big New Labour beast plans to take his place. Barry Sheerman, 81, is standing down at the next election, having served Huddersfield since 1979. Given the West Yorkshire seat’s rock-solid Labour credentials, moves are afoot to bounce one David Miliband into the seat.
