The exhibition is an interactive multi-media video, sound, photography installation and poetry performance project including a series of artist's books that explore the relationship between bodies, shifting landscapes and cultural memory in Viet Nam. Through an embodied experience attending to the sense of sight, sound, and tactile navigation, PRISM offers an experience that challenges the viewer to question the relationship between notions of memory and amnesia, home and displacement, and construction and destruction. Ngo Van Sac burns wood into paintings
VietNamNet Bridge - "In the Midst of Life" is a solo exhibition of wood burn paintings by Hanoi-based artist Ngo Van Sac, which will open at Craig Thomas Gallery, 27i Tran Nhat Duat Street in District 1, HCM City from October 25 to November 25. It will feature the artist’s passion in blocks of fresh, untreated wood that grip his images with rawness and the curved veins in the wood’s surface take the eyes gently up and down the portraits, sneaking into the intricacies of the pictures. Sac’s production process must involve a lot of planning, but the artworks are never overdone. Minimal color and simple materials prevent visual saturation and then he pencils the outlines onto the wooden blocks, then blowtorches them, masking off areas with a metal spatula to modulate the color. The burnt images are surprisingly detailed, and fire alone cannot offer such sharpness. Sac has always painted people. Art exhibition in Washington celebrates Hanoi’s 1,000th birthday
Hanoi celebrated her 1,000th birthday last year, and this September, the Arts Club of Washington will host an exhibition of Vietnamese contemporary fine art in Washington, D.C., to commemorate its millennial year. Entitled Hanoi 1,000, the event will feature artwork by six exhibiting Vietnamese painters, who all live and work in Hanoi. The artists range in age from 29 to 77 years old, and their works are in a variety of mediums, including watercolor on handmade paper, oil on canvas, lacquer on wood and woodblock prints. The exhibit includes works of art by Dang Thao Ngoc, Dinh Thi Tham Poong, Phung Pham, Trinh Tuan, Vu Dinh Tuan and Vu Thu Hien. The artists share a commitment to expressing human emotions through the cultural prism of their art. As a highlight of the exhibition, the master lacquer artist and teacher Trinh Tuan will be giving a week-long workshop on lacquer painting. Pre-registration is required. Local percussion group to perform in US Hanoi-based percussion ensemble Go Group will perform in the US next month under an invitation of Brigham Young University in Utah. The group will perform local pieces such as “Bai ca chim ung” (The Falcon Song) by Dam Linh, Rhapsody Viet Nam (Vietnamese Rhapsody) by Do Hong Quan as well as foreign works in Utah and Idaho. Formed in 2010, the group includes Phan Nam, Nghiem Manh Tuan, Bui Anh Dung and Tran Xuan Hoa from the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and the Vietnam National Opera Ballet. The group has just arrived at Brigham Young to rehearse for their first concert on November 2.
