Oil spill response training held in Quang Ninh Some 200 people from oil exploiting and transporting companies and organisations in the northern province of Quang Ninh were provided with necessary knowledge and skills to respond to oil spills during a training course held in the locality on March 28. The course was jointly organised by the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Vietnam Maritime Construction Investment Consultancy Joint Stock Company. Participants were equipped with measures to control oil spills, laws and regulations related to the issue as well as technical measures to clean up oil-contaminated areas and ways to manage environmental pollution after the oil spill. Nawaplastic still hungry for Binh Minh Plastic shares Owning a dominant stake in Binh Minh Plastic (BMP) did not quench Nawaplastic Industry Co., Ltd. (Nawaplastic)’s thirst for BMP shares. Most recently, Nawaplastic registered to buy an additional 1.17 million BMP shares to increase its holding to 44.525 million shares, equalling 54.39 per cent of the charter capital. The transaction is expected to occur between June18 and July16. The registered share volume is the remaining part of the 2.86 million shares that Nawaplastic failed to buy during previous transactions. Notably, Nawaplastic registered to buy 2.86 million BMP shares during transactions on May 14-June 12, however, the Thai investor ended up buying 1.69 million of the registered shares as BMP did not match Nawaplastic’s target price. Artist's abstract works on show Artist Dao Trong Luu is displaying 15 abstract oil on acrylic paintings at the Tu Do Gallery in HCM City. Nhip Dieu Va Choi (Rhythm and Game) features works he created in Sa Pa this year like Overture Tet (Overture for Lunar New Year), Giao Huong Ngay Moi (Symphony for a New Day), and Tiec Da Khuc (Party of Nocturne). "I love to be alone with music and paint," the 69-year-old painter says. "I always begin my day with a ‘game' of oils, toile, acrylics, and melodies, and end with a symphony of colours. "That's my art." First Cat Chu mangoes hit shelves in Japan The first batch of fresh Cat Chu mangoes from Vietnam hit shelves at an Aeon supermarket in Chiba prefecture, Japan on November 7. According to Trade Counselor to Japan Nguyen Trung Dung, about 3.5 tonnes of Cat Chu mangoes were exported to Japan in the first shipment. The mangoes are scheduled to go on sale at more than 200 Aeon grocery stores throughout Japan and sell for 429 to 645 JPY (3.48 to 5.24 USD) each. More than 80 tonnes of fresh mangoes will be shipped to the island country by air and sea by the end of 2015. Mangoes are loved by many Japanese people, but they are very expensive when grown in Japan, and can cost from 5,000 to 10,000 JPY (40.6-81.2 USD) each, a representative from Aeon said, adding that Cat Chu mangoes will enjoy good sales thanks to their affordable price. Donors urge quality public investment Donors called on Vietnam to restructure public investment to foster quality growth at a workshop in Hanoi on October 4. While examining the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI)’s five-year socio-economic development draft, most donors supported the country’s projected annual growth rate of 6.5 percent in the next five years instead of 7 percent. They said the reasonable rate would enable Vietnam to improve social protection policies, increase basic services for the poor and the most vulnerable groups, and create more jobs. Eamonn Murphy, the UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, said the country should pay attention to equity issues as economic growth alone cannot ensure human development.
