MOM encourages conversion of contract workers to permanent staff
SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) is encouraging employers to consider converting contract employees into permanent staff. Speaking in Parliament on Monday, the ministry's Senior Parliamentary Secretary Hawazi Daipi said companies should make the conversion if such employees are found to be suitable for the job and if the job is expected to be available on a permanent basis. Mr Hawazi was responding to a question from labour MP Zainal Sapari who wanted to know if the ministry has plans to give more employment rights to low wage contract workers. He noted that contract workers may feel that they lack employment certainty and job security due to the short tenure of their contracts. While they are protected under the Employment Act, they might not be eligible for certain benefits such as annual or sick leave if they do not meet the qualifying period of three months due to breaks in contracts. MPs call for national conversation to reach wide spectrum of S’pore society
SINGAPORE: Even as Minister for Education Heng Swee Keat's committee gets down to work on the national conversation process, there have been calls to reach out to as wide a spectrum as possible. Singapore's parliamentarians say that the "Our Singapore Conversation" initiative requires the participation of many in order to hear the views about the kind of nation Singaporeans want to have in the next 20 years. Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Yaacob Ibrahim said: "For the Malay community, it offers an opportunity for us to voice our concerns not as Malays but as Singaporeans first. "Whether they are issues that are important to us, they must also be important to the national community. We have a stake in the future of this country." Political observers emphasise the need for the right environment for the dialogue sessions. Nominated MP Assistant Professor Eugene Tan said: "For all the different consultations, it is important that the environment is … [Read more...] about MPs call for national conversation to reach wide spectrum of S’pore society
National Conversation on Our Singapore “must engage silent majority”
SINGAPORE: The National Conversation on Our Singapore, first announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his National Day Message and elaborated upon during the National Day Rally, is gathering momentum in social media. The official "OurSGConversation" Facebook page has garnered close to a hundred responses since it was launched less than a week ago by Minister for Education Heng Swee Keat, who is fronting the national conversation effort. One contributor hopes that the Facebook page will help facilitate an authentic conversation for the benefit of Singaporeans. A working mother of two shared her challenges and said she was "tense" about whether her children could excel in school and succeed in life. She added that working takes up time and energy, leaving little of her time for her children. There were also calls for the conversation to have multi-language platforms for all Singaporeans, and not just focus on the English-speaking group. Veteran Member of Parliament … [Read more...] about National Conversation on Our Singapore “must engage silent majority”
