Canadian police officer regrets not investigating passcodes conversation on day of Huawei CFO’s arrest

· December 8, 2020 ·

VANCOUVER: A Canadian police officer acting as the airport liaison when Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested two years ago testified on Tuesday that he should have investigated further when he thought he overheard a fellow police officer and a border agent discussing the passcodes to Meng's devices. Meng's lawyers have argued that U.S. and Canadian authorities illegally coordinated during her investigation and arrest. In particular they claim that Canadian border agents intentionally gave identifying details about Meng's electronic devices - including passcodes - to Canadian police. They further allege that Canadian police shared those details with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Meng, 48, was arrested in Canada in December 2018 on a warrant from the United States. She is facing charges of bank fraud for allegedly misleading HSBC Holdings Plc about Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's business dealings in Iran, causing the bank to break U.S. … [Read more...] about Canadian police officer regrets not investigating passcodes conversation on day of Huawei CFO’s arrest

Robot vacuum cleaners can be used by hackers to ‘spy’ on private conversations: NUS study

· December 7, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: Your robot vacuum cleaner could be picking up private conversations along with the dust and dirt in your home. Computer scientists from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have demonstrated how a common robot vacuum cleaner and its built-in light detection and ranging (Lidar) sensor could be used to "spy" on private conversations, the university said on Monday (Dec 7). The method, called LidarPhone, repurposes the Lidar sensor that a robot vacuum cleaner normally uses for navigating around a home into a laser-based microphone to eavesdrop on private conversations. The research team, led by Assistant Professor Jun Han and his doctoral student Sriram Sami, managed to recover speech data with "high accuracy", said NUS. Mr. Vice President, we are speaking: A conversation about ‘manterruptions’

· October 28, 2020 ·

“Mr. Vice President, I am speaking.” Why did these five words from the only Vice-Presidential debate of the 2020 US election go viral? Because when Senator Kamala Harris hit back at Vice President Mike Pence for interrupting her, women all over the world felt that moment. It was for all of the women who'd been talked over before and maybe didn't have the words at the time. Or for those women who’ve had to sit through frustrating boardroom meetings and social events, with gritted teeth and a smile plastered on their face, working out the fine line between being assertive but not “aggressive,” passionate but not “emotional,” professional but not “personal.” Women everywhere are able to recall work meetings and social interactions where they were talked over by men. And the research backs it up. A 2014 study at George Washington University revealed that when men were talking with women, they interrupted 33 per cent more often than when they were speaking to men. In a … [Read more...] about Mr. Vice President, we are speaking: A conversation about ‘manterruptions’

One year ago today, Colorado hired Karl Dorrell: The inside story of a courtship that required just one conversation

· February 23, 2021 ·

One year later, the relationship seems preordained. Karl Dorrell has instilled his brand of calm and cool into a Colorado football program that was in dire need of both — a program that had been ditched by its head coach, a program that was forever one win short, that had a fragile roster and lacked momentum and was consumed by uncertainty as the pandemic descended and society lurched to the edge. One year later, the skeptics have been silenced. Unflappable as the Flatirons, Dorrell provided instant stability, kept the roster intact, managed his staff, navigated the local health restrictions, demanded accountability, identified a quarterback, guided the Buffaloes to unexpected success and was named the 2020 Pac-12 Coach of the Year. “He has done everything I thought he would do, and he has been exactly who I thought he was,’’ Colorado athletic director Rick George said recently as he reflected on the process that led to Dorrell being named head coach on Feb. 23, 2020. “We … [Read more...] about One year ago today, Colorado hired Karl Dorrell: The inside story of a courtship that required just one conversation
