Earlier this year, as many of you know, WIRED dedicated our February issue of the magazine to an excerpt of 2034 . Then, for the past six weeks, we serialized the excerpt on this website. Today we are running the final WIRED chapter —and an interview with the authors. (The book in its entirety goes on sale next week.) MARIA STRESHINSKY, WIRED: So, where did the idea for this book come from? ADMIRAL JAMES STAVRIDIS: From another novel that I read many years ago, in the 1980s, called The Third World War , by Sir John Hackett. It is a superb novel that imagines a global war between the United States and the Soviet Union. Over the past few years, the conversation about China and the United States heading toward a cold war began to gain real currency. You heard Henry Kissinger, for example, say that “we're not in a cold war, but we're in the foothills of a cold war.” I started to think: How can we avoid a war with China? And I think part of the reason we … [Read more...] about What Did I Just Read? A Conversation With the Authors of

India curbs diagnostic testing kit exports as COVID-19 spreads
NEW DELHI: India is restricting the export of most diagnostic testing kits, as COVID-19 cases in the South Asian nation topped 3,350 on Sunday (Apr 5) despite a three-week nationwide lockdown to slow the spread of the respiratory disease. India, which in recent weeks already banned the export of certain drugs, along with ventilators, masks and other protective gear needed by both patients and medical staff, issued the latest directive on Saturday. The move comes even as US President Donald Trump urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a phone call on Saturday, to release supplies of anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, which is being tested as a possible treatment for patients with COVID-19 - the disease caused by the coronavirus. "The two leaders agreed to remain in touch on the issue of global supply chains for critical pharmaceuticals and medical supplies and to ensure they continue to function as smoothly as possible during the global health crisis," White House spokesman … [Read more...] about India curbs diagnostic testing kit exports as COVID-19 spreads
Williamson pushes Pelicans past NBA-leading Jazz, 129-124
NEW ORLEANS - Zion Williamson showed no fear of renowned Jazz rim protector Rudy Gobert and spearheaded a relentless — and effective — assault on the Utah basket. Williamson had 26 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and the New Orleans Pelicans held off a late Utah comeback bid to beat the NBA-leading Jazz 129-124 on Monday night. “My mindset was, whatever I can do to give my teammates energy, I’m going to do it,“ said Williamson, whose dominant third quarter gave New Orleans a double-digit lead heading into the fourth. “After the first two quarters of me kind of reading their defence, I really got a feel for it and I just was on the attack.” And the defenders he attacked included the 7-foot-1 Gobert, a two-time NBA defensive player of the year. “Rudy Gobert is a phenomenal defender and phenomenal shot-blocker. So, it’s not easy making shots over him,” Williamson said. “Honestly, I looked to draw the foul initially, but somehow I finished those shots.” Brandon Ingram … [Read more...] about Williamson pushes Pelicans past NBA-leading Jazz, 129-124
Provincial government denies report that it sold Dominion Foundry site
Under fire over the future of the Dominion Foundry heritage site, Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Clark insists the provincially owned land has not been sold to a developer. In the wake of a CBC report that the Progressive Conservative government had a provisional deal to sell the Eastern Avenue property to an unnamed buyer, Clark said no such accord has been reached. “Regardless of whether there (were) conversations around this site ... at the end of the day, there are no deals around this site. This site remains in our possession,” the minister said Monday. “A heritage impact assessment that was conducted on the abandoned site found that it required demolition so that it could undergo full environmental remediation,” added Clark. “Our government approved a negotiating mandate that would help facilitate the future sale of the site,” he said. “But let me be clear, the site has not been sold to anyone. There is no final sale on this property.” Citing the heritage impact … [Read more...] about Provincial government denies report that it sold Dominion Foundry site
The Theatre of Marriage
When things go wrong in our relationships, we often blame external factors such as other people, long working hours, or, more recently, the challenges of a global pandemic. However, a more significant reason why relationships suffer is that most of us have unresolved inner conflicts that interfere with our ability to trust and love. These conflicts occur between different and often competing 'parts' of our self, and also between parts of our self and parts of our partner's self. This complex communication dynamic is easier to understand and work with if we imagine that we are each made up of many different selves, and the ones who get the least attention , love, and expression are those most likely to cause problems in our life. Understanding and learning to accept our 'characters' brings inner content and peace and frees us to focus on and nurture our relationships. We are never 'out of character ' Most of us have acted or spoken in ways that feel ‘out of character’ … [Read more...] about The Theatre of Marriage
