by Thu Anh Historical films, long a neglected genre in award competitions, will have their chance to shine when the Viet Nam Film Festival is held in Phu Yen Province in December. After a decade of domination by commercial films, the prestigious Golden Lotus award will include the film company Ky Nguyen Sang's film Khat Vong Thang Long (Thang Long Aspiration) in the best film category. The film is about the life of King Ly Thai To who moved the capital from Hoa Lu (now in the northern province of Ninh Binh) to Thang Long (Ha Noi). The producer released the film to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of capital Ha Noi last year. Khat Vong Thang Long will compete with four other historical films in addition to 13 commercial films nominated for the prize. Viet Nam News spoke to Austrian Ambassador Georg Heindl to mark his country's National Day today. The two countries will mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year. How do you view the development of bilateral ties over that period? I am aware that the Government of the then Democratic Republic of Viet Nam appreciated the early opening of diplomatic relations by the Republic of Austria, which took place on December 1, 1972. The doi moi (renewal) policy gave a huge boost to bilateral relations. From the early 1990s on, the economic potential of Viet Nam was seen clearly in Austria, and opening an embassy was on the agenda. Already in 1995, the then Austrian Federal President Thomas Klestil visited Viet Nam. In 1998, finally, the means were found to open the embassy.
