Tens of thousands of protesters have violated COVID restrictions to fight against a new high court ruling that has put a near-total ban on abortion in Poland. Protesters have taken to the streets for the seventh day straight, blocking major roads and bridges and chanting anti-government slogans. Some protesters dressed as Handmaid's Tale characters took part in demonstrations that saw churches vandalized and Masses disrupted on Tuesday. It was seen as a targeted attack on the Catholic Church, seen as an ally of Poland's government. The protests began last Thursday over a Constitutional Court ruling which no longer allows women to terminate pregnancies due to fetal abnormalities and only legalizes abortion in cases of rape, incest, or threats to a woman's health. Women's rights groups expressed fury at the decision, slamming it as "a war against women". The protests have since turned into a wider fightback against the government which is being accused of chipping away at the … [Read more...] about How Poland’s strict new abortion ruling could be mirrored across the globe
The European Parliament will vote on a resolution declaring abortion access a human right and which demands an end to barriers to abortion, including conscientious objections. The resolution is based on a report presented last month by the Croatian leftist MEP Predrag Fred Matić and calls on European Union member states to give access to abortion without restrictions, labelling abortion an “essential health service” and a “human right”. The report also states that it “urges the Member States to decriminalise abortion, as well as to remove and combat obstacles to legal abortion” and claims that “a total ban on abortion care or denial of abortion care is a form of gender-based violence”. While some medical practitioners refuse to carry out abortions for religious or conscientious reasons, the report states that “an individual’s conscience clause may not interfere with a patient’s right to full access to healthcare and services”. The European bishops have written a stern … [Read more...] about Report Claims Abortion Is a ‘Human Right’, Demands Removal of Barriers
Demonstrators interrupted Masses around Poland Sunday in protest of a High Court ruling last week outlawing eugenic abortions of unborn babies with disabilities. In Poznan, Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow and other cities, protesters burst into churches while service were taking place, “confronting priests with obscenities” and spray-painting churches with slogans and phone numbers of abortion providers, Associated Press (AP) reported . Last Thursday, Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal struck down a provision permitting doctors to abort fetuses on the grounds of congenital defects such as Down syndrome, ruling that the law violated the national Constitution. In its decision , the court argued that aborting a child because of probable birth defects constituted eugenics, an effort to cull out the weak and undesirable in a society, notoriously practiced by the Nazis against Jews and disabled persons, and by Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger against blacks and minorities in … [Read more...] about Protesters Disrupt Sunday Masses in Poland After Court’s Abortion Ruling
Governor Andrew Cuomo is among eight New York officials being sued over the state's 2019 abortion law. The Reproductive Health Act , which codified abortion rights in Roe v Wade into state law, allows doctors to perform an abortion after 24 weeks, but only in cases where there is "an absence of fetal viability, or the abortion is necessary to protect the patient's life or health." The act was designed to ensure New Yorkers could make personal health care decisions and medical professionals could provide services without fear of prosecution, the governor's website said. It mirrors laws in others parts of the world, including England, where abortions can be carried out after 24 weeks in very limited circumstances—for example, if the mother's life is at risk or the child would be born with a severe disability. Cuomo's act received the backing of groups including the New York Civil Liberties Union, which said it was cause for "long-overdue celebration." But it was … [Read more...] about Why Andrew Cuomo faces lawsuit over New York’s abortion law
President Donald Trump said Friday at the March for Life event that New York and Virginia passed laws allowing abortions "up until the moment of birth." However, both states have very strict measures regulating abortions performed after 24 weeks. "Nearly every top Democrat in Congress now supports tax-payer-funded abortion all the way up until the moment of birth," he told the pro-life audience in Washington, D.C. Trump singled out New York and Virginia for their laws that allow abortion after 24 weeks. "Last year, lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother's womb right up until delivery," he said. In January 2019, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Reproductive Health Act, which allows healthcare practitioners to perform an abortion after 24 weeks. However, if the procedure is done after 24 weeks, there must be "an absence of fetal viability, or the abortion is necessary to protect the … [Read more...] about Donald Trump says New York and Virginia passed laws allowing abortion “up until the moment of birth,” but is it true?
