The world today is undergoing a fundamental transformation and there are several facets to the emerging uncertainty. Traditional and non-traditional security threats (economic and military competition, climate change, piracy, radical ideology, cyber threats, drug and human trafficking, and energy and food security) have grown in magnitude. Power, whether economic, political or military, is fractured. Trade and technology are at the heart of a new round of competition and contestation. Nationalism and regionalism are on the rise. There is less multilateralism but greater multi-polarity. Hedging and multi-alignment are the order of the day.Obstacles aheadAll known paradigms are experiencing stress, which calls for readjustments. At the broadest level, the inadequacies of the post-World War II international institutions are showing up because of the complexities and uncertainties characterising global politics and the economy today. The old consensus is fraying and a new consensus is yet … [Read more...] about An Asian engine driven by India and China

History-making ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ readies for release
LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s been 25 years since a major Hollywood studio released an English-language film with a primarily Asian cast. The last was Wayne Wang’s adaptation of the generational tear-jerker “The Joy Luck Club,” which was released in 1993. But that dry spell is about to end with the release of the opulent romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians” on Wednesday Aug. 15. The film is based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling book about a Chinese-American woman who gets a culture shock when she meets her boyfriend’s wealthy family in Singapore. Veteran producer Nina Jacobson said that when she and her Color Force partner Brad Simpson (“The Hunger Games”) read Kwan’s manuscript, they knew it had to be a movie. “We just tore through it,” Jacobson said. “It was so specific that it became really universal: Anybody who has ever faced in-laws who felt that they were not worthy of their beloved.” They knew … [Read more...] about History-making ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ readies for release

Amid the most dramatic sell-off since 2008, Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin has “startled” Wall Street analysts, economists, and bankers with an “unusual” statement about the credit capacity of the nation’s six largest banks, the Washington Post reports. In a statement posted on Twitter Sunday, Mnuchin said he had “convened individual calls with the CEOs of the nation’s six largest banks” and assured the American public that those banks had enough credit to extend to Americans and their businesses. Today I convened individual calls with the CEOs of the nation’s six largest banks. OPINION: Restricting high-rise development can protect the rest of Tucson’s housing
Restricting high-rise development to the university area can, for the time being, protect the rest of Tucson’s housing. The Main Gate district is increasingly dotted with towering monoliths that impose themselves into the landscape as constant reminders of Tucson’s future and the gentrifying influences at play. They also offer a possibility for housing development in Tucson, despite their current reality presenting a grim future. This has led to the question: Should high-rises expand out to the rest of the city or stay sectioned off? For the vast majority of Tucson, vertical building or density hasn’t been the case for the most part. Recent developments, primarily centered on students, have slowly rippled out but stayed centered around the main downtown area, already featuring taller buildings. A dense urban landscape has never been part of Tucson, with only minimal development downtown that still matches or barely exceeds the current height of Main Gate’s … [Read more...] about OPINION: Restricting high-rise development can protect the rest of Tucson’s housing
