French artist exhibits hot landscapes (10-09-2005) French artist Jean Mathieu Duffau is presenting 30 oil paintings featuring Vietnamese landscapes in his first solo exhibition at HCM City’s Lotus Gallery. The artist arrived in the city early this year on the recommendation of a friend who spent many years living in Viet Nam and loved the landscapes. "I was immediately taken by the country’s scenery and bright sunlight," Duffau said. "I’ve seen several celebrations here, from Tet (Lunar New Year) in HCM City to the traditional festivals of ethnic minority people in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta." The painter’s style is embellished with an unusual mix of hot colours that breathe fresh life into his canvasses. His subjects include floating markets, rivers, sailboats and water buffaloes. Family features a whole clan riding on a bicycle, while Four Schoolgirls romantically depicts high school students clad in white ao dai walking in the bright sunlight. Zen-inspired artist exhibits works (16-10-2009) HCM CITY — Lay Ta (Prostrating to Give Thanks), a solo show consisting of 21 paintings on various materials, mostly canvas, by veteran painter and art critic Le Ky Thuong has opened in HCM City. Though Thuong’s paintings feature the lotus, the symbol of Viet Nam, his rendition of the flower is quite different from that of other artists. While his peers use pink, Thuong uses white and light blue to paint the lotus and yellow and brown to represent pond water. His use of colours is reminiscent of the simple beauty found in Japanese works. Thuong says he enjoys Zen in painting like many people enjoy Zen in meditation. "Painting is a means to come back my mind; my mind is my destination," he says. "After years of travelling, I have come to my final destination like a small frog living in a lotus pond. I feel it is home, the place of peace. "All this happened unexpectedly as in the case of the Zen master artist-painter Hakuin … [Read more...] about Zen-inspired artist exhibits works
