Forum seeks ways to sustainably develop forests The Government should develop support policies for forest owners to prevent harvesting of immature forest, speakers at a conference said on Friday in HCM City. More than 200 policymakers and business executives attended the forum, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to discuss ways to develop the forest industry in a sustainable manner. Viet Nam's forest areas have increased by 30 per cent in the 2006-10 period compared to the 1998-2005 period, according to Nguyen Ton Quyen, deputy chairman and general secretary of the Viet Nam Timber and Forest Product Association. The timber volume from plantation forests has increased in recent years, from four million cubic metres in 2009 to 5.5 million cubic metres in 2010 and 6.5 million cubic metres last year. Trade with Austria has room to grow Viet Nam and Austria had room to accelerate their bilateral relations, especially in trade and investment, said Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice chairman Doan Duy Khuong yesterday. During a business conference in Ha Noi, Khuong emphasised the great role of businesses in enhancing and speeding up co-operation between the two countries. Viet Nam was making efforts to step up economic reforms, with a focus on facilitating the development of the private sector and perfecting the legal system and market economy mechanism to attract more foreign investment, Khuong said. Japanese group to invest in Vietnam Japanese Zeon Group plans to invest in Vietnam in its effort to reduce costs and investment risks. In the initial period, Zeon will build a plant to make special casks, each with a cargo capacity of 1.3 tonnes of rubber from April 2012. The plant will be built on an area of 94,000sq.m in Haiphong with a total cost of 2-3 billion yen (US$26-39 million). Once completion in April 2013 it is expected to produce around 120,000 casks per year. Later the plant can be used to produce some kinds of medical equipment. Previously, Zeon asked its Chinese partner to produce casks. However, thanks to cheap labour in Vietnam, Zeon has decided to build its own plan in the country. Zeon specializes in rubber, chemicals, machinery, electronics and food, and it is famous for tyres and automobile spare parts. Storm Nari causes losses of $760 million for VN
Storm Nari: economic loss nears 16 trillion VND The figures were provided by the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control and storm-struck localities. Quang Binh province was hardest hit as the disaster claimed 12 lives, injured 53 others, and caused economic damage of 300 billion VND in the locality. In the meantime, the central provinces are making efforts to surmount the storm consequences and restore production. TNK-BP expands eastern front with Conoco Vietnam bid Russia's TNK-BP, developing a gas project in Vietnam acquired from its major shareholder BP, has also bid for ConocoPhillips assets in the Asian country, TNK-BP's head of upstream operations Alexander Dodds said on Monday. "We did put a bid in," Dodds told a news briefing in response to a question. TNK-BP, a 50-50 joint venture between BP and a quartet of Soviet-born businessmen, has already taken over some gas assets in the South China Sea from its British co-owner and expressed its interest in expanding in Vietnam. It has said it will bid for one block of nine blocks on offer by the Vietnamese government in a tender which opens this week. State oil and gas group Petrovietnam has already said it will bid for the ConocoPhillips assets, three oil fields and one gas field which are further north in the South China Sea.
