Black man Jacob Blake shot in back by police in Wisconsin city, says governor

· August 24, 2020 ·

MILWAUKEE: Wisconsin's governor on Monday (Aug 24) deployed his state's National Guard to Kenosha following a night of sometimes-violent unrest that came after police in the lakeside city shot a Black man multiple times in the back. Governor Tony Evers also called a special legislative session to take up a package of bills aimed at addressing problems with law enforcement following the shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake late Sunday afternoon. Blake's three sons saw the shooting, a lawyer for the family said. After being rushed to a hospital, Blake was out of surgery and in stable condition, his father told news media on Monday. In a video taken by a bystander across the street from the shooting, Blake can be seen walking toward the driver's side of a gray SUV followed by two officers with their guns drawn at his back. Seven gunshot sounds can be heard as Blake, who appears to be unarmed, opens the car door, and a woman nearby jumps up and down in disbelief. It was unknown … [Read more...] about Black man Jacob Blake shot in back by police in Wisconsin city, says governor

The coronavirus jab’s most tantalising side effects? It may help fight cancer, chronic pain… and even Alzheimer’s

· February 27, 2021 ·

Joan Wakefield has barely been able to walk for the best part of six months. The 72-year-old from Stockport had a knee replacement in October and has since suffered infections in the scar tissue, causing agonising pain. Then at the beginning of this month she received the first dose of AstraZeneca 's Covid-19 vaccine. 'I woke up the next morning and the leg pain and stiffness was gone,' she says. 'I couldn't believe it. I joked with my partner about whether the vaccine had anything to do with it. Previously, I couldn't even bend my leg. Now I can extend it fully, and even put my shoes and socks on. I'm optimistic I'll be able to return to work sooner, rather than later, now.' It seems ludicrous – a vaccine designed to protect against one virus can, somehow, improve other totally unrelated elements of health. But Joan Wakefield is far from alone. A man receives his Covid-19 vaccinations at Lichfield Cathedral, Staffordshire earlier this week RELATED … [Read more...] about The coronavirus jab’s most tantalising side effects? As protests rock US cities on holiday weekend, Jacob Blake speaks out

· September 7, 2020 ·

NEW YORK: Jacob Blake, the black man who was shot in the back by a white police officer in Wisconsin last month, spoke out for the first time from his hospital bed as duelling demonstrations over racial justice and policing continued to roil US cities. In a video posted on Twitter, Blake, dressed in a green hospital gown, described being in constant pain after the shooting that left him paralysed from the waist down. "I got staples in my back, staples in my damn stomach," he said in the video posted by his attorney, Ben Crump, late on Saturday. "It hurts to breathe, it hurts to sleep, it hurts to move from side to side, it hurts to eat." The Aug 23 shooting of Blake, 29, reignited protests over racism and police brutality that have swept the United States since May when another black man, George Floyd, died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. The demonstrations have coincided with widespread upheaval over the social and economic … [Read more...] about As protests rock US cities on holiday weekend, Jacob Blake speaks out

Novichok used on Navalny ‘harder’ than previous forms: Report

· September 12, 2020 ·

BERLIN: The novichok nerve agent used to poison Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny was 'harder' than previous forms, Der Spiegel magazine reported the head of Germany's foreign intelligence service as saying. Bruno Kahl, head of Germany's foreign intelligence service, informed what Spiegel termed a "secret meeting" about the potency of the poison, the magazine said, but did not give any other details of the meeting. Spiegel added that a delegation from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was said to have visited at the weekend the Berlin hospital where Navalny is being treated. Navalny, President Vladimir Putin's highest-profile critic, was airlifted to Germany last month after falling violently ill while travelling in Siberia. German doctors say he was poisoned with novichok, a Russian nerve agent. Moscow says it has seen no evidence he was poisoned. Der Spiegel reported on Thursday that Navalny had made further progress in his recovery, and was able … [Read more...] about Novichok used on Navalny ‘harder’ than previous forms: Report

Wax on, wax off? Why cleaning your ears might do more harm than good

· July 10, 2019 ·

Hands up, if you enjoy scraping out your ears and seeing the amount of wax extricated. I’ll admit, I belong to the club, even though I know better than to insert anything into my ears. There’s something relaxing about the sensation when you gently drag a scraper down the ear canal. Like a light massage for your ears, if you will, or an ASMR experience that sends tingles up and down your spine. "It's like scratching an itch," said Dr Lim Keng Hua, consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon from Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre’s Ear Nose Throat, Head & Neck Surgery – Singapore ENT Specialist Clinic. "The more you scratch, the itchier and more satisfying it feels." Even more satisfying is seeing what the scraper scoops out. And I’m sure I’m not alone in this. The fact that YouTube’s Wax Whisperer (aka UK-based audiologist Neel Raithatha) has 1.3 million followers watching his wax extrication videos shows that people love doing a Marie Kondo on their ears – even when it’s not … [Read more...] about Wax on, wax off?
