HSBC’s 11th annual Expat Explorer survey reveals that expats in Vietnam annually earn $90,408 on average, with 31 per cent seeing an income rise of 25 per cent and above. Vietnam, accordingly, ranks in the first place in the world with nearly three quarters (72 per cent) saying moving to Vietnam helped them save more, while 72 per cent also agree that they have more disposable income than they did in their home country. Both proportions are higher than the global average (52 per cent for savings and 56 per cent for disposable income). The survey was conducted in the form of an online questionnaire, with the participation of 22,318 expats from 163 countries and territories. The most popular purpose of their saving or investment is still retirement (43 per cent), followed by buying the first/next property (30 per cent). Wood exports continue expanding in first months of 2018 An upturn has been seen in exports of wood and wooden products, with export value in the first five months of 2018 reaching 3.3 billion USD, up 8.2 percent from the same period last year. The top four markets were the US, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK), together accounting for 78.1 percent of total export revenue. Strong growth was seen in the RoK and the US markets, with 45.3 percent and 9.7 percent respectively. In the first four months of 2018, Vietnam earned 1.1 billion USD from exporting wood and wooden products to the US, 367.3 million USD from China, 350.7 million USD from Japan and 288.8 million USD from the RoK. However, Nguyen Quoc Khanh, President of the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City, warned that the US, the largest market for Vietnamese wood and wooden products, has prioritised the domestic wood sector by reducing corporate income tax from 35 percent to 25 percent. A new variety of banh xeo to sample in Ben Tre By Lam Van Son in Ben Tre Banh xeo (pan cake) is a traditional dish which people normally use shrimp, pork with mushroom and bean sprouts to create a mouth-watering delight. But banh xeo made of oc gao ( snail) and pachyrrhizus is a new Ben Tre classic and one you must sample if you come to this beautiful province. From Dinh Khao ferry station in the Mekong Delta province, you travel around 12 kilometers to Cho Lach District, then make a right turn and after five kilometers there is an oc gao reserve area. The reserve covers 150 hectares of Co Chien River. Coming to the area, tourists can witness the lively scene of people searching for snails and then try this most wonderful meal.
