NEW DELHI: Realty shares were trading on a mixed note in Tuesday's morning session. Shares of Indiabulls Real Estate (up 4.07 per cent) , Godrej Properties (up 1.13 per cent) , DLF (up 0.86 per cent) and SOBHA (up 0.86 per cent) were among the top gainers. While Oberoi Realty (down 2.04 per cent) , Mahindra Lifespace Developers (down 0.96 per cent) , Sunteck Realty (down 0.52 per cent) , Phoenix Mills (down 0.25 per cent) , Brigade Enterprises (down 0.04 per cent) and Prestige Estates Projects (down 0.03 per cent) were the top losers in the index. The Nifty Realty index was trading 0.35 per cent up at 327.95 around 10:08 am. Benchmark NSE Nifty50 index was up 15.25 points at 12134.25 , while the BSE Sensex was up 74.26 points at 41229.38 . Despite a slump in the housing sector, India's biggest mortgage lender HDFC reported another quarter of consistent performance with healthy growth of 14% in its loan book, stable spreads of 2.3% and largely flat gross non-performing loans of 1.6%. The growth in loan book to Rs 5 lakh crore was led by 16% growth in retail lending. Corporate lendingInterestingly, corporate loans, or lending to developers, too inched up 6% year on year (less than 5% in the first and second quarters) to Rs 1.3 lakh crore. Reported spreads in this business improved to 3.26% in the third quarter from an estimated 3.1% in the last two quarters. John Lanchester Nina Stibbe's Love, Nina, a collection of letters to her sister from the period in the mid-80s when she was working as a nanny, is funny and sharp and has a distinctive streak of wildness: no book this year made me laugh more. Also funny and sharp, though in a darker vein, is ASA Harrison's he-said, she-said psychological thriller, The Silent Wife (Headline). Finally, the last entry in the funny-sharp stakes are the novels of Penelope Fitzgerald, which I've been reading thanks to Hermione Lee's biography, Penelope Fitzgerald: A Life (Chatto & Windus). The odd thing is that Lee's book has had more influence on my reading than anything else this year, even though I'm not going to read the biography itself until I've finished the novels. That's because I don't want prematurely to spoil the mystery of how Fitzgerald could have known so much about so many worlds, from pre-revolutionary Moscow to 60s theatre-school London to German Romanticism.
