Living in a big city makes you mean and antisocial, study finds (and the question that reveals how YOU score on the ‘sociability scale’)

· October 23, 2018 ·

In may come as no surprise to many big city residents, but living in a large city can make you mean. Researchers say it can lead to people switching off their 'natural karma'. They found people quickly learn that cooperative behavior won't benefit them - and start caring less about others.  Florida researchers found people quickly learn that cooperative behavior won't benefit them - and start caring less about others. THE QUESTION THAT REVEALS HOW NICE YOU REALLY ARE The researchers say the key question that can reveal how nice you are to strangers is:Would you tip your waitress if you knew you'd never return to her restaurant? For most people, the answer is probably, because that's how most of us are socialized. But what if you knew the waitress would never know if you left a tip?Without the incentive of her approval, would you still be generous?  'We are actually walking around with Stone Age minds,' said Michael McCullough of University of Miami. 'We have a … [Read more...] about Living in a big city makes you mean and antisocial, study finds (and the question that reveals how YOU score on the ‘sociability scale’)

The Witness: how Jonathan Blow rejected game design rules to make a masterpiece

· February 9, 2016 ·

Most of the games industry would describe a seven-year development cycle as hell on Earth. It brings to mind tortured, much delayed projects like Duke Nukem Forever and Daikatana – the sort of games that sink studios. So when asking Jonathan Blow to describe the process of making The Witness, the critically acclaimed puzzle game he started way back in 2008, you may expect horror stories. But you won’t get them. “It was very chill,” he says. Apparently, over those several years, Blow and his team at Thekla, Inc brought on extra help from architects and sound designers when they needed it, but for the most part they were just “six people in a room” with lenient working hours. They generally turned up by about 10:30am. Thursdays and Fridays were optional. While Blow acknowledges that indie development is difficult, he doesn’t think that translates to the same kind of taxing work you can expect at some AAA studios where tales of endless … [Read more...] about The Witness: how Jonathan Blow rejected game design rules to make a masterpiece

Failure to restructure will mean annihilation — Obiora Okonkwo

· April 21, 2019 ·

This piece examines the concept of restructuring within the context of Nigeria’s diversity and concludes that the only pathway to progress is to restructure. Diversity Let me take us through ordinary definition of diversity. The ordinary dictionary meaning of diversity is “a state of being diverse” as captured by the Collins Dictionary of English language. Diverse itself connotes difference. That is why synonyms of diversity include variety, miscellany, assortment, mixture, range, array, multiplicity and medley. Diversity has been used in different forms and in different contexts. We have seen it used in the science and sociology when we talk about biodiversity and cultural diversity. Either way, it connotes difference. The University of Oregon in the United States of America, writing about diversity said “the concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual … [Read more...] about Failure to restructure will mean annihilation — Obiora Okonkwo

Blow to Khadse as ACB clean chit challenged

· December 14, 2019 ·

There appears to be trouble ahead for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former minister Eknath Khadse after a court allowed an intervention application challenging the clean chit given by the State anti-corruption bureau (ACB) to him in an alleged land grabbing case.Judge S.R. Navandar allowed the application filed by anti-corruption activist Anjali Damania in May last year against the clean chit to Mr. Khadse concerning a prime plot belonging to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) at Bhosari that he had allegedly acquired by illicit means by abusing his position as revenue minister.Last year, in its final submission to a Pune court, the ACB had said that it failed to find “definite proof” that Mr. Khadse had misused his office to seize a three-acre plot in the possession of the MIDC for his private use near Pimpri-Chinchwad.“The intervention application was allowed after follow-up of more than one-and-a-half years … We submitted … [Read more...] about Blow to Khadse as ACB clean chit challenged
