Businesses support overtime cap increase for workers
Chu Van An, deputy CEO of Minh Phu Seafood, speaking at a recent forum to discuss the proposal, said during the peak season his company receives a lot of orders and needs to increase workers’ overtime hours. This is not something that businesses are keen on since they have to pay 1.5-3 times the normal salary for overtime hours, but find it inescapable. Other export businesses also voiced support for the proposal by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to extend the overtime limit for from 300 hours a year to 400. Phan Thanh Xuan of the Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association said that since workers in the leather sector are paid by output, the more they work, the higher their salary is. "The relationship between an employer and an employee is symbiotic," and an increase in work time would raise a business’ competitiveness, she added. Vu Tien Loc, chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), which represents businesses, said over … [Read more...] about Businesses support overtime cap increase for workers
China-proposed BRI great for business, says Uruguayan producer
PANAMA CITY - The China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has been great for business and helped improve the business environment, head of Uruguay's largest dairy cooperative has said. Since 2018, when Uruguay officially joined the innovative scheme of the BRI designed to spur global growth through stepped-up trade, major Chinese corporations have shown greater confidence in Uruguayan exports, Alpuin told Xinhua. "We have received sizable Chinese companies that are interested in continuing to make progress in agreements, and everything indicates that we are going to multiply our exports," he said. … [Read more...] about China-proposed BRI great for business, says Uruguayan producer
Mexican businesses focus on labor provisions as they pore over USMCA trade deal text
MEXICO CITY/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mexican business leaders on Wednesday began poring over texts of a new stricter trade deal with the United States and Canada, looking for details of how more intrusive enforcement of labor rules in Mexico would affect their operations. Moises Kalach, a leader of the CCE business lobby, which represented Mexico’s private sector in the negotiation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) that will replace the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), said that businesses felt sidelined. “We would have liked to have been (in the negotiations) more ... to give our opinion more. This is the reality, we participated but not as much as we would have liked,” said Kalach. USMCA was signed more than a year ago to replace NAFTA, but Democrats controlling the U.S. House of Representatives insisted on major changes to labor and environmental enforcement before bringing it to a vote. In an unusual display of bipartisan and … [Read more...] about Mexican businesses focus on labor provisions as they pore over USMCA trade deal text
