From bone broth to mushroom rendang, these niche home businesses have become hugely popular
There is a fetid smell emanating from the bowels of Dexter Lim’s small family home. The aroma is at first faint and barely perceptible, but becomes gradually more powerful the further you walk into his house – its potency assaulting your olfactory glands in pregnant, laden waves. “All the cheese that I make is kept in these chillers, ” says the affable Lim by way of explanation, smiling and gesturing in the direction of an array of large refrigerators directly behind his dining table. Each fridge is bursting at the seams with a diverse panoply of cheese – from mozzarella to blue cheese to halloumi. Lim sells over 100 kilos of cheese in a week and although he makes cheese every day and his refrigerator is packed to the brim, he has to move to a commercial space to keep up with demand. — ART CHEN/The Star It might seem like a strange endeavour, making cheese in a tropical country but Lim is one of a growing number of young people who have successfully transformed a niche … [Read more...] about From bone broth to mushroom rendang, these niche home businesses have become hugely popular
Possible chip glut scenario
George Town: The local technology sector could face a possible chip glut situation soon. Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) senior research fellow Shankaran Nambiar (pic) told StarBiz that semiconductor and electronic manufacturers had ordered more than necessary. “They stocked up over the past nine months because they had worried about a shortage situation. “The lead time – the time it takes for orders to arrive – has risen as a consequence. The current waiting period for chips across the semiconductor and electronic industries is 14.1 weeks, up from 13 weeks in January. Anything beyond the 14-week waiting time is considered a danger zone. “Many customers are worried that the automotive industry competed for components, causing the shortage and delay. They reacted by ordering more, double-ordering, to be well-stocked, ” Nambiar said. He added that this would not be a problem during normal circumstances, as the excess stock would be absorbed. “The current … [Read more...] about Possible chip glut scenario
New council aims to get more women on boards
In the last four years, the proportion of women on the boards of Singapore's top 100 listed companies doubled to 15 per cent. While a "good achievement", it is hardly enough, President Halimah Yacob said at the Istana yesterday, as she announced the formation of a new council to get more women on the boards of organisations. Madam Halimah will be the patron of the Council for Board Diversity, which will be co-chaired by Mr Loh Boon Chye, chief executive officer of the Singapore Exchange (SGX), and Mrs Mildred Tan, chairman of the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC). The council consisting of 20 members - nine men and 11 women - used to be known as the Diversity Action Committee (DAC), which was formed in 2014 and focused on SGX-listed companies. It will have an expanded scope to look into female representation on the boards of organisations in the public sector and people sector, which includes non-governmental organisations, voluntary welfare organisations and … [Read more...] about New council aims to get more women on boards
The best ways to stay sane while you’re working from home
Yeeli Lee’s work life changed abruptly when the Covid-19 pandemic began early last year. The founder of BHuman, a beauty tech start-up based in Singapore, went from having face-to-face meetings with clients and business partners, to conducting meetings online and live-streaming activities and events. “Like most people, I miss working closely with my team,” says Lee, whose skincare products are designed to combat climate change. “Before the pandemic my colleagues and I would take walks after lunch and have casual chats throughout the day, sharing creative ideas. Then, that all came to a stop. It was hard getting used to. “For months after being confined to my home, I found myself checking emails and text messages all day and night – sometimes even when I was still in bed in my pyjamas. I felt anxious and had trouble sleeping, too. “The boundaries between my work and personal life became blurred. As an entrepreneur, I also have to work on weekends, so you can imagine how tough the … [Read more...] about The best ways to stay sane while you’re working from home
