· February 23, 2021 ·

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell emphasized the damage the economy has suffered due to the pandemic and stressed that there was still a long way to go to a full recovery. “The economic recovery remains uneven and far from complete, and the path ahead is highly uncertain,” Powell said in testimony to the Senate Banking Committee. Powell said that Fed will continue to support the economy with ultralow interest rates and large-scale bond purchases until “substantial further progress has been made.” He added that a full recovery “is likely to take some time.” Several times in his testimony, Powell mentioned that the labor market was still 10 million jobs smaller than it was prepandemic. And he dismissed inflation risk, saying a sustained rise in prices above the Fed’s target is unlikely. Stocks rallied on Powell’s testimony.  By emphasizing the weakness of the economy and saying inflation remains soft, Powell out to rest fears of a policy shift toward raising rates following … [Read more...] about Fed Chair Powell Refuses To Say If He Is ‘Cool’ with Biden Spending Plan

· February 17, 2021 ·

This story is part of Crossing the Broadband Divide , CNET's coverage of how the country is working toward making broadband access universal. Federal Communications Commission acting chair Jessica Rosenworcel announced on Wednesday the formation of a new task force dedicated to implementing "long-overdue" upgrades to improve the agency's flawed broadband maps. But the new data isn't likely to be available until next year, an official leading the effort said during the agency's monthly meeting. The new Broadband Data Task Force will work to make sure that data, which is supposed to show where broadband exists and doesn't exist in the US, is more precise. The agency has been heavily criticized for years for inaccuracies in the data that often overstates broadband coverage. The task force, which is composed of existing FCC staff, will be led by Jean Kiddoo, who chaired the agency's Incentive Auction Task Force.
