China's reportedly deploying missiles in the Spratly Islands outposts could mean an act closer to declaring an Air Defense Identification Zone in the disputed waters and Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam should raise voices to protect their rights, experts said. U.S. news network CNBC reported on Wednesday that China has installed anti-ship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missile systems on three of its outposts in the South China Sea. The report quoted unnamed sources as saying that according to U.S. intelligence assessments, the missiles were moved to Fiery Cross Reef, Subi Reef and Mischief Reef within the past 30 days. Japan will step up its activity in the contested South China Sea (Vietnam's East Sea) through joint training patrols with the United States and bilateral and multilateral exercises with regional navies, Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said on Thursday. Inada said in a speech at Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank that Japan's increased engagement in the area, where Japan shares U.S. concerns about China's pursuit of extensive territorial claims, would include capacity building for coastal nations. Inada, whose country has its own dispute with China over territory in the East China Sea, said that if the world condoned attempts to change the rule of law and allowed "rule bending" to succeed, the "consequences could become global." Some 900 passengers and crew who came aboard the British luxury cruise ship Voyages of Discovery are on an eight-day visit of Vietnam beginning Dec. 23. During the ship's maiden call to HCM City , they will go on a sightseeing tour of the city and visit My Tho and Can Tho cities and the Cai Rang Floating Market (in Can Tho) before leaving on Dec. 25. The SuperStar Aquarius will dock at Tien Sa port in Da Nang city on November 5 and Cai Lan port in Quang Ninh province on November 7, according to the SaiGon Travel Service Company (Saigontourist). The cruise liner will make 18 voyages to Vietnam this December and 17-19 voyages each month in the first quarter of next year.
