Christmas shoppers are being warned not to buy fake and potentially dangerous toys, which can contain toxic materials, damage hearing and pose choking or strangulation hazards. The Local Government Association, which represents councils in England and Wales, is warning that counterfeit, unsafe toys typically flood the market in the run-up to Christmas as criminals exploit a surge in demand for “must-have” and sold-out items. Recent toys seized and confiscated by councils’ local trading standards include more than 54,000 teddy bears which posed a choking hazard, electric scooters which had no safety documentation and audio items that exceeded legal decibel limits for toys which could damage a child’s hearing. A second hotel in Hull has stepped in to offer 28 homeless people rooms over Christmas after their previous booking by a homeless project was cancelled.The group had been due to stay at the Royal Hotel in Hull but were then told they could not, prompting an outcry.The hotel later said they had been told about damage to rooms by the group at an Ibis hotel last Christmas.Raise the Roof Hull Homeless Project says the allegations are "lies" and Ibis denies the claim.Reacting to the offer by the Doubletree Hilton, which also includes Christmas dinner, Carl Simpson, from the project, said: "Who says miracles don't happen?"He told the BBC the group had originally booked 14 twin rooms for 28 people for £1,092, hoping to build on the success of last year's event at the Ibis. Christmas shoppers are being urged to be wary of counterfeit products following a rise in cases involving fake goods. According to KPMG, over the past two years, 39 cases involving a total of £116m of counterfeit and pirated goods – which can range from hair straighteners and perfume to ebooks – have been prosecuted in the UK. The firm said the number of cases reaching court “continues to rise”. The figures come days after the City of London Police’s Intellectual Property Crime Unit (Pipcu) launched a campaign using the hashtag #shockingfakes to highlight the dangers of buying counterfeit electrical goods. Britain is poised for its biggest ever day of shopping next week, with consumers set to mark the Black Friday sales spree by spending as much as £2bn in a single day. Retailers across the country will cut prices on 27 November, as a shopping tradition launched in the US becomes a fixture in the British high street calendar. Spending nearly £2bn in a single day is equivalent to £83m every hour, £1.4m every minute and more than £23,000 every second. It would mean that every person in UK spends an average of £31 on shopping on Black Friday. Last year British shoppers spent £1.75bn, according to Visa.
