Can Tho (VNA) - Vulnerable groups including women and low-income earners should be taken better care of during climate change response initiatives, experts said. Nguyen Thi Yen from CARE Vietnam suggested poverty reduction and gender equality be among key targets in all strategies and investment projects on climate change. The vulnerable groups, especially women, need to be involved in implementing climate change-related projects and making socio-economic development plans at all levels, she said. A majority of the poor, including women, mainly come from ethnic minorities, coastal areas in the Mekong Delta and Red River Delta. They suffer from more severe climate change damage due to a lack of resources for recovery, according to Yen. High-level dialogue finds out measures for Vietnam`s climate change response – Social affair
The high-level dialogue between the National Steering Committee on Climate Change and development partners was held in Hanoi on October 25 with the aims to seek measures to help Vietnam in climate change mitigation. The event was co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Trinh Dinh Dung, who is head of the National Steering Committee on Climate Change, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) Tran Hong Ha, and UN Country Coordinator in Vietnam Pratibha Mehta. Prime Minister (PM) Nguyen Xuan Phuc received IPCC Chairman Hoesung Lee in Hanoi on October 24. During the reception, the PM spoke highly of the cooperation between the IPCC, which is under the World Meteorological Organisation, and Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, especially amid heavy climate change impacts on the country at present. Climate change is happening at a fast pace in Vietnam, the Government leader said, noting that the country has suffered from the most severe drought and floods in the past 30 years in 2016, affecting its economic growth and the attainment of socio-economic targets. In 2016, the national climate change strategy has received strong support from the international community. The Global Climate Index indicates that Vietnam ranks 5th among countries most affected by natural disasters, which kill hundreds of people and cause losses of 1.9 billion USD or 1.3% of GDP each year on average. Vietnam has been pursuing a national strategy on climate change as well as other strategies on green growth, natural disaster prevention and control, and renewable energy development. International support Many countries and international organizations have pledged assistance for Vietnam’s climate change response.
