Of the best-known café brands in Vietnam, Starbucks is the coffee chain with the highest prices. Every cup of Espresso, Cappuccino and Latte there is VND15,000-20,000 higher than other foreign brands such as Gloria Jeans Coffee, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Illy, Dunkin Donuts and Caffe Benne, and VND25,000-35,000 higher than Trung Nguyen and Highlands Coffee. The Hanoi Times - Vietnam has been long known as a major producer of coffee and it is no surprise that the people have developed their own styles of coffee which have broader and richer taste. Coffee grown in Vietnam is divided into two types, Arabica and Robusta coffee. Arabica coffee is cultivated in northern mountainous areas and in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, 1,000 meters above sea level. Robusta coffee, which has a higher content of caffeine - from 3 to 4 percent - was brought to Vietnam by French colonists in the late 19th century. Vietnam is now the world’s biggest producer of Robusta beans, usually used for lower grade coffee blends and as a filler for the higher-quality Arabica. The Central Highlands province of Dak Lak exports around 900,000 tons of Robusta coffee every year, which contributes to the country’s status as one of the largest Robusta exporters. Bien Hoa Vinacoffee wheeled out the world’s largest cup of coffee at a ceremony in Buon Me Thuot Town, DacLacProvince yesterday. The event is part of the second Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival, which runs from December 10-14 at the BietDienMuseum in the Central Highlands province. The 100m-tall cup with a capacity of 3,613 litres is a symbol of the global standing of Vietnamese coffee in terms of reputation and quality, says Nguyen Thanh Tung, marketing manager of Bien Hoa Vinacafe, one of 30 domestic brands participating in the National Brand Programme to boost local brands abroad.
