Red Dress fashion shoot sparks controversy

· March 1, 2021 ·

(ANNews) – Anishinaabe and Mohawk fashion designer Lesley Hampton made headlines this week over a dress she made in 2019 that used imagery of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people. The red-spotted, cream-coloured dress – which was showcased during Toronto Fashion Week 2019 – was featured in a picture by Ashley Callingbull on her social media recently. Much of the critique of the dress comes from how triggering it was to families of missing and murdered Indigenous women, the “sexy” nature of the photos, the bloody aesthetic, and the notion that the brand was exploiting the MMIWG2S+ movement for fashion. “Posing sexy is NOT the way to honour the cause,” Cree activist Deborah Green wrote online. “In fact, it further perpetuates sexualization of Indigenous women, and reinforces the colonization of our bodies as disposable and open to predators.” “I’ve been re-traumatized; it brings back all the memories,” said Green, whose sister was murdered in Calgary … [Read more...] about Red Dress fashion shoot sparks controversy

George Floyd-Themed Proposal to School Dance Sparks Outrage: ‘Take My Breath Away’

· February 22, 2021 ·

A teenager's George Floyd -themed dance proposal has sparked outrage and prompted an investigation by school officials in Nevada. A photo captured the female student brandishing a poster that includes a drawing of Floyd in what appears to be a school sports field. The poster says: "If you went to SADIES w/ me it would take my BREATH away." The image sparked outrage after it was shared across social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok. Foothill High School in Henderson said the school and the Clark County School District had launched an investigation into the proposal for its Sadie Hawkins dance. "Foothill High School and CCSD are aware of the matter and are currently investigating," the school wrote in a message posted on its website. "Foothill and CCSD will not tolerate racially insensitive behaviors that contradict an inclusive community and impact the school culture of our students. "As you are aware, Foothill High School and CCSD cannot comment on individual … [Read more...] about George Floyd-Themed Proposal to School Dance Sparks Outrage: ‘Take My Breath Away’

Who hits the biggest ball of all? Devon Conway ranks the Black Caps, and Finn Allen

· March 1, 2021 ·

NZ Cricket Firebirds' batting sensation Finn Allen blasts equal quickest century in New Zealand List A history. After Finn Allen gave another jolting reminder of his hitting power, his Firebirds opening partner believes the 21-year-old can make a seamless transition to international cricket - potentially later this month. But Devon Conway won’t go so far as to rank the best ball strikers in New Zealand cricket, diplomatically saying Allen, Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham could each claim that title on a given day. As Conway, Guptill and Neesham assembled in Wellington on Sunday with their Black Caps team-mates ahead of Wednesday’s Twenty20 game three against Australia at a crowd-free Sky Stadium, Allen was equalling records down the road at the Basin Reserve . Topscorer for the T20 Super Smash champions with 512 runs at a strike rate of 194, Allen matched Peter Fulton’s record for fastest list-A century in New Zealand (off 50 balls).
