· March 3, 2021 ·

THE Queen’s private apartments are usually a rare space she can unwind away from the public eye. However, Her Majesty, 94, has given royal fans a sneak peek inside her plush sitting room during lockdown during her high profile video calls - and there’s lots of tiny details to spot. Typically the comfortable room at Windsor Castle is shut off from the public, and there have only been a handful of photographs taken there. But virtual engagements - such as last week's call with the Governor of South Australia - show how the Queen relaxes in her personal time. From family photos to figurines of her beloved corgis, the monarch has certainly made the space her own. Here’s what we can discover from her recent Zoom and previous looks inside the room... Best Thing We Ate This Week: Omi wagyu with aged akazu vinegar at Esora

· September 20, 2018 ·

Brazen, gutsy and seasoned right to the edge. Had this morsel of buttery, indulgently marbled beef been seasoned with one more grain of salt, it would have tipped over the edge of being too salty. We say this with some awe: It takes a chef with a confident hand, and sure taste buds to pull off a dish with such audacious balance of flavour, especially in a fine Japanese restaurant. And as any seasoned chef would, there were clever counterpoints to the meat’s rich, umami flavours in the beguiling acidity of aged akazu vinegar and the mellow warmth of burdock root puree. READ: Best Thing We Ate: Tsarskaya oyster with jalapeno pepper-infused ponzu at Esquina At the ravishing new Esora along Mohammed Sultan Road, Chef Shigeru Koizumi serves kappo cuisine like we’ve never seen. Parlaying his experience in the three-Michelin-starred Nihonryori Ryugin in Tokyo, and nouvelle French restaurant Odette in Singapore, Koizumi has created an elegantly unique and original dining experience. … [Read more...] about Best Thing We Ate This Week: Omi wagyu with aged akazu vinegar at Esora

How a stylist tailored a fashion designer’s outdated Singapore home for the 21st century

· March 5, 2021 ·

Traditional cheongsams can be exquisite expressions of elegance, but their limitations are clear to anyone who has worn one: they are restrictively narrow in parts, oppressively warm in humid climes and overly formal for everyday life. The outdated home, she realised, could be tailored for the 21st century, just as she had artfully modernised the Chinese dress for her home-grown fashion label, The Missing Piece. Built in 1997, the three-storey corner terrace house they had lucked upon was graced with good bones and towering cathedral ceilings – a prerequisite for Fock. But it was dark, with an entrance leading directly into the lounge room that narrowed the living area and made it almost inhospitable. Additionally, the bathrooms were oddly disproportionate to their respective bedrooms and not at all … [Read more...] about How a stylist tailored a fashion designer’s outdated Singapore home for the 21st century
