NEW YORK: The New York state attorney general is investigating whether Donald Trump and the Trump Organization improperly manipulated the value of the US president's assets to secure loans and obtain economic and tax benefits, and said Trump's son Eric has been uncooperative in the civil probe. The disclosure was made in a filing on Monday (Aug 24) with a New York state court in Manhattan, where Attorney General Letitia James is demanding that the Trump Organization, Eric Trump and others comply with subpoenas from her office. Lawyers for the attorney general said the subpoenas were issued as part of her "ongoing confidential civil investigation into potential fraud or illegality", adding there has been no determination that any laws were broken. Alan Garten, chief legal officer for the Trump Organization, where Eric Trump is an executive vice president, said the company has tried to cooperate with James, a Democrat, as the Republican Trump seeks a second term in office. US downloads of WeChat, Signal apps spike after Trump threatens ban
NEW YORK: More users in the United States downloaded chat app WeChat and its encrypted alternative Signal, after President Donald Trump threatened to ban WeChat, owned by Chinese company Tencent, according to Sensor Tower data shared with Reuters on Thursday (Aug 13). WeChat users in the United States rushed to install the app before it could disappear from the app stores. Others, especially in China, sought alternatives like the encrypted Signal, owned by non-profit Signal Foundation. WeChat app downloads in the United States rose 41 per cent in a six-day average from the week prior to the US ban announced last Thursday, according to Sensor Tower. Signal app downloads in US and China app stores separately jumped by 30 per cent and 90 per cent. “Not only are alternatives like WhatsApp and Telegram officially blocked in China, but Signal has an inherent advantage in that it's well known for being strongly encrypted,” Stephanie Chan, Mobile Insights Strategist at Sensor Tower … [Read more...] about US downloads of WeChat, Signal apps spike after Trump threatens ban
US evangelical leader Falwell to leave university after personal scandal
WASHINGTON: Jerry Falwell Jr, a towering force in the US evangelical Christian movement whose endorsement played a key role in President Donald Trump's 2016 victory, has resigned as president of Liberty University, the school said on Tuesday (Aug 25). Falwell's dramatic departure as head of one of the world's largest Christian universities came a day after Reuters reported that a business partner of the Falwell family had come forward with a stunning allegation: that he had been in a years-long sexual relationship involving Falwell's wife and the evangelical leader. Falwell, who for over a decade served as president of the university founded by his father, did not respond to a request for comment. Tuesday's announcement from the university put an end to a day of fevered back-and-forth over Falwell's fate. Falwell, 58, had initially agreed to resign shortly after the Reuters report appeared, but then changed his mind following media reports about his decision, according to the … [Read more...] about US evangelical leader Falwell to leave university after personal scandal
Demands for justice at funeral of George Floyd
HOUSTON: Houston said farewell to George Floyd in a rousing hometown funeral Tuesday (Jun 9), with poignant tributes and calls for justice for the 46-year-old African American whose death "touched the world" and ignited global protests against police brutality and racism. Politicians, civil rights activists and celebrities joined in sharing memories of the man they called a "gentle giant" after his golden casket was carried into the sanctuary by six pallbearers in masks, as a row of police officers stood at attention and saluted. Civil rights leader Al Sharpton delivered a fierce eulogy, punctuated by the deep chords of a church organ, in which he accused President Donald Trump of showing indifference over Floyd's death, and sending police a signal of impunity. "We are fighting wickedness in high places!" Sharpton thundered, uttering the phrase over and over as he accused Trump of "scheming on how you can spin the story rather than how you can achieve justice". Major US indices rise, tech retreats after Fed policy shift
WASHINGTON: Wall Street ended in a mixed fashion on Thursday (Aug 27) following the Federal Reserve's major inflation policy change, with the S&P posting a new record but the Nasdaq retreating. The benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.6 per cent at the close to 28,492.27, while the broad-based S&P 500 posted its fifth straight record rising 0.2 per cent to 3,484.55. But the Nasdaq snapped its streak of five back-to-back records retreating 0.4 per cent to finish at 11,926.16. The day's major development was the Fed's decision to lessen the priority on fighting inflation in favour of maximising employment for low-income families. The move will not have any effect in the near-term because borrowing rates are at near-zero as the economy weathers the coronavirus downturn. But when economy begins to expand, the decision indicates the central bank will keep the policy interest rate low for longer - and that is what Wall Street wanted to hear, said Maris Ogg of … [Read more...] about Major US indices rise, tech retreats after Fed policy shift
