28,000 charging stations for electric cars is possible – but where? Industry players weigh in

· March 11, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: At this year’s Budget , Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat said Singapore will aim to phase out vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE) over the next 20 years. It is part of a bigger vision under the Land Transport Master Plan 2040 to make the country’s land transport sector more environmentally sustainable. At the core of this strategy are electric vehicles (EVs). In fact, after 2030, Singapore should see no new purchases of ICE vehicles, according to Senior Minister of State for Transport Dr Janil Puthucheary at the Transport Ministry’s Committee of Supply Debate. That will be no mean feat, given Singapore has more than 900,000 of such vehicles today. To incentivise electric vehicle adoption, the Government is dangling several carrots such as the EV Early Adoption Incentive (EEAI) – essentially a rebate on Additional Registration Fees (ARF) capped at S$20,000 starting next January. The Big Read: After a decade of fits and starts, it’s all systems go for Singapore’s electric vehicle dream

· March 1, 2021 ·

SINGAPORE: When contractor and part-time Grab driver Koh Jie Meng started driving an electric vehicle (EV) in 2019, he had to make special trips to a flatted factory in Ang Mo Kio every two to three days to charge the Hyundai Kona Electric, which he rented. The 30-year-old, who lives in a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Yishun, would much prefer to slow-charge the car while it was parked for the night as some EV owners did elsewhere in their home garage. But as no such charging facilities were available at any of the car parks near him, he had to travel to the only fast-charging point in Singapore’s north back then — SP Group’s station at Techplace I — and take about an hour to recharge his EV. Sometimes, he would arrive at the spot only to find two other cars waiting in line to tap the two fast-charging pods available, setting him back by another 30 minutes or so before he could finally perform the chore and get back on the road. But such days are now behind … [Read more...] about The Big Read: After a decade of fits and starts, it’s all systems go for Singapore’s electric vehicle dream

High-powered electric motorcycles to be allowed on Singapore roads from April

· March 5, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: From April, high-powered electric motorcycles may be used on Singapore's roads, in line with efforts to encourage the adoption of cleaner vehicles in the country. Under current regulations, only electric motorcycles with a power rating of no more than 10 kilowatts (kW) are allowed. Those motorcycles are also barred from use on expressways. However, from Apr 1, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will allow motorcycles with power ratings of more than than 10kW to be ridden on the roads. Electric motorcycles with a top speed of at least 50kmh will also be allowed on expressways from next month. Announcing the move - as well as a slew of other measures to incentivise the adoption of electric vehicles - Senior Minister of State for Transport Janil Puthucheary said this was in line with efforts to update regulations to keep pace with technology. “Motorcyclists can then now do their part for the environment by choosing an electric model,” said Dr Janil during the … [Read more...] about High-powered electric motorcycles to be allowed on Singapore roads from April

Uber promises 100per cent electric vehicles by 2040, commits US$800 million to help drivers switch

· September 8, 2020 ·

REUTERS: Uber Technologies Inc on Tuesday said every vehicle on its global ride-hailing platform will be electric by 2040, and it vowed to contribute US$800 million through 2025 to help drivers switch to battery-powered vehicles, including discounts for vehicles bought or leased from partner automakers. Uber, which as of early February said it had 5 million drivers worldwide, said it formed partnerships with General Motors and the Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi alliance. In addition to the vehicle discounts, Uber said the US$800 million includes discounts for charging and a fare surcharge for electric and hybrid vehicles, the cost of which would be partially offset by an additional small fee charged to customers who request a "green trip." Uber said that vehicles on its rides platform in the United States, Canada and Europe will be zero-emission by 2030, taking advantage of the regulatory support and advanced infrastructure in those regions. The deals with GM and the Renault … [Read more...] about Uber promises 100per cent electric vehicles by 2040, commits US$800 million to help drivers switch

New York to invest US$750 million to expand electric-vehicle infrastructure

· July 17, 2020 ·

NEW YORK: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday (Jul 16) announced an investment program that would allocate US$750 million to build charging stations and other electric-vehicle infrastructure as part of the state's long-term goal to reduce emissions. The measure is set to create more than 50,000 charging stations and will largely be funded by the state's investor-owned utility companies, with the total budget capped at US$701 million through 2025. An additional US$48.8 million is allocated from a 2017 settlement with German carmaker Volkswagen AG over its diesel emissions cheating scandal to fund electric school and transit buses, as well as charging stations. New York's announcement comes on the heels of a similar measure by Florida, which on July 10 announced an US$8.6 million investment to expand charging stations. While electric vehicle sales have gradually increased over the past few years, they still made up less than 2 per cent of all US vehicle sales in 2019, … [Read more...] about New York to invest US$750 million to expand electric-vehicle infrastructure
