Okay, you're going to love this...I was just scanning the Los Angeles Learning Annex's catalog and I decided to peruse the biographies of the seminar presenters.John McEnroe is that famous, tennis playing anger-non-manager who used to throw fits on the tennis courts of the world. His bio skips the rage credentials and mentions his on the court wins, and the class he's running: "How to Play and Win by Your Own Rules."There is an upbeat class run by a lady who was shot in the head by a terrorist. She's teaching something like How to Overcome Any Adversity. Fair enough, she certainly knows how to overcome ONE big setback! But the bio I like the most is promoting a meditation class: "Discover the Crucial Truth for Achieving Inner Peace."The bio says the presenter "was born fully illumined and spent his formative years in the Himalayas among the Hidden Masters, in whose presence all 108+ secrets were revealed to him."Wow, he was born, fully illumined, which I suppose means enlightened. He … [Read more...] about Fame, Fortune & Good Looks Aren’t Everything!

There is an old African adage. It goes like this: "When you're up, they are up with you, and when you are down, they are done with you."A few years ago, I watched Ernest Evans " Chubby Checker" walk the entire length of the New York Port Authority Bus Terminal. That would have been impossible in the heyday of the TWIST. That was Chubby Checker's hottest dance craze and hit record from August 1961 where it remained Billboard's No 1 hit --the first 45 hit record in two different years. Then, his tunes topped every chart on every radio station in the U.S. There he was, years later, fit as a fiddle, but walking without being mobbed by millions of screaming fans. He was pleasant and easy to talk to. He was so comfortable in his own skin--unlike many former super stars whose luster have faded somewhat. At the same Port Authority, about one week later, I ran into Henry Winkler who played the Fonze. Put it this way: "Maybe I have met a few less interesting people."A few months before that … [Read more...] about The Politics of Fame, Fortune and Vice Versa
MEDINA, Ohio -- The Medina County Historical Society recently hosted local historian Joann King, who presented "Fame, Fortune and Felony," profiles of famous former residents of Medina County. Thirty people attended the event April 9 in the A.I. Root Co. community room in Medina. The "fame" portion of her presentation dealt with H.G. Blake, one of Medina County's most famous residents. King assured the audience that she would try to present little-known facts about Blake. She began with the tragic story of his parents' trip across Vermont in December 1821. Surprised by a blizzard, H.G. Blake Sr., his wife, Lucy, and their 14-month-old daughter, Rebecca, were stranded in the snow on a mountaintop. Mrs. Blake froze to death; Mr. Blake was rescued, but lost all but the big toe of his left foot. Rebecca lived to rejoin her family, including her three-year-old brother, H.G. Jr. When H.G. Jr. was 12, he accompanied the Rhoades family to Medina County's Guilford Township, where … [Read more...] about Medina County Historical Society features Fame, Fortune and Felony in program on prominent figures from Medina’s past
Feeding time: Vo Thai Lam with one of his swallows. This wild species of bird is rarely close to humanbeings but they show intimacy with their owners once getting accustomed to them. — VNS Photo Birds' life: A swallow house in the bird nest project. — File Photo by An Vu Vo Thai Lam, of Phan Rang City in the central province of Ninh Thuan, is just like any other man except that he farms swallows nests, a delicacy in Viet Nam. Rumours about the man who owns enough swallows to build a bird kingdom turn into fact when travellers see the abandoned music and drama theatre he is using to produce the nests. Only 100m from the entrance of the theatre, visitors hear the sound of hundreds of swallows soaring down from the sky. This once popular gathering place for humans is now home to various kinds of swallows, all secreting saliva to build nests. "The swallow species is very smart," Lam points to the dark space ahead him, "Their caves are dark and deep. The nests lie right … [Read more...] about Swallow nest farm brings fame, fortune
Maya Jama likes a prank. Last month, making a swift exit from a Fashion Week dinner hosted by Victoria Beckham as paparazzi flashbulbs twinkled and strobed, she hurtled into the back of an Uber. ‘I was like, “Mate, just drive. Just go.” The whole journey the driver was like, “What do you do?” So I told a complete lie. I was like, “I wrote a book that got really big…” I basically told the story of Harry Potter,’ she laughs. He bought it. You can’t blame him — Jama certainly has the gift of the gab. When we meet on a warm September afternoon in a west London studio, shortly after wrapping up her ES Magazine photo shoot, she’s cracking jokes and popping McDonald’s fries into her mouth between takes. After a quick change from slouchy tailoring into a blue tracksuit and no shoes, she plonks herself down on a sofa, knees curled to her chest, and starts talking candidly at hyper-speed in a husky sing-song … [Read more...] about Maya Jama on fame, fortune and living in the limelight
