Hong Kong police arrest 11, Beijing voices support for action against ‘riots’

· June 13, 2019 ·

HONG KONG/BEIJING: Beijing on Thursday (Jun 13) described the mass protests against Hong Kong's extradition bill as "riots", and said it supported the local government's response. Hong Kong Police Commissioner Stephen Lo He said what began as a peaceful gathering on Wednesday had degenerated into a riot with protesters "acting violently in an organised manner". Police arrested 11 people while 22 officers were injured and police had fired about 150 tear gas canisters, he said. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to break up crowds Wednesday after demonstrators - angry over legislation they say would leave people vulnerable to China's opaque justice system - blocked roads and brought the city to a standstill. Videos of Hong Kong police beating protesters have sparked accusations of brutality. COVID-19: Hotels in Hong Kong see spike in occupancy rates as thousands return

· March 27, 2020 ·

HONG KONG: As thousands of Hong Kong citizens and expatriates return to the city, many are seeking refuge in hotels, fearful that cramped apartments in one of the world's most expensive property markets could put families or flatmates at risk. Social distancing is tough in Hong Kong, where the bulk of the city's 7.4 million population lives in flats that on average are no bigger than 46 sq m. The concerns have triggered a spike in occupancy rates for those Hong Kong hotels prepared to take self-quarantine guests, even as most of the industry grapples with a devastating slump due to coronavirus. One expatriate who has lived in Hong Kong for more than 12 years opted to self-quarantine in a hotel when returning last week, worried that going back to his two-bedroom apartment could put his wife and two daughters at risk. "In case I had it, I didn't want to get the girls sick," he said, declining to be identified due to the sensitivity around the issue. Hong Kong will ban all non-resident arrivals amid COVID-19 outbreak

· March 23, 2020 ·

HONG KONG: Hong Kong will ban all non-residents from entering the financial hub from Wednesday (Mar 25), its leader said on Monday, as it tries to halt a recent spike in coronavirus infections from people returning from abroad. Despite its proximity to the Chinese mainland, the financial hub has managed to stave off a runaway outbreak of the deadly virus partly thanks to the public overwhelmingly embracing face masks, hand hygiene and social distancing. Yet in the last two weeks, the number of cases has more than doubled to 318 infections after locals and foreign residents flooded back once the pandemic spread to Europe and North America. "From midnight of Mar 25, all non-Hong Kong residents flying in from overseas will not be allowed into the city," chief executive Carrie Lam said, adding that the order would be in place for at least two weeks. All individuals coming from Taiwan and Macau, including Hong Kong residents, will also need to be quarantined, Lam said.
