At the Youth Entrepreneurship Forum 2018 last month, Minister of Information and Communication Nguyen Manh Hung suggested that the Prime Minister should soon recognize English as the second official language of Vietnam to help startups reach out to the world. The proposal stirred a heated discussion on social media and prompted numerous professionals to pitch in with their views and opinions. While some welcomed the idea and supported widespread use of the language in Vietnam, others were wary of the cultural, legal and other implications of formalizing it as an official language. Everyone agreed that it was good to improve English use and fluency in the country, so the debate boiled down to whether declaring and using it as an official language was a feasible, practical option for Vietnam. Viet Nam News HCM CITY — The students of HCM City Open University’s foreign languages courses on June 2 translated a classic English novel, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, into a play and staged it at the Drama Theatre in HCM City’s District 1. Everyone was delighted by the production’s quality as the amateur actors acted in a language that was not their mother tongue. The play was the third in a programme called THEATRE IN EDUCATION: English and American Literature Classes’ Performances this year. The final performance is an adaptation of My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult, which will be staged at the Drama Theatre on June 9. The programme began in 2016, and has been attracting more and more student performers, building a diverse audience of students and expats, along with adding more volunteer native English speakers to advise the performers. Writing contest launched (08-05-2006) HCM CITY — The Institute for Cultural Exchange with France (IDECAF) in HCM City announced a French language essay contest for youth this month to enlighten them on the finer points of Vietnamese and French culture. IDECAF said that the contest aimed to stimulate students to explore more about language and culture and indulge a craving for fine art. This year the essay contest, entitled Joining Artists will feature Vietnamese and French culture in the fields of cinematography, music and fashion and finish with a multiple choice test in the first round, to be held on Sunday. Young people between 16 and 30 years of age studying at schools, colleges, universities and foreign language centres are being called on to participate in the contest.
