The country is among the 10 fastest growing tourist destinations in the world, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)’s 2018 Tourism Highlights Report. Overall tourist numbers rose by 19 per cent to 86 million last year, while the number of international arrivals increased by a whopping 29 per cent. The luxury hotel sector continued to see a better year with EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) last year increasing by 1.7 per cent, according to Grant Thornton Vietnam’s 2018 Hotel Survey. Hanoi (VNA) – Major cities and tourist destinations across the country have catered for crowds of visitors who poured in to enjoy the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday. According to the Hanoi Tourism Department, the capital city welcomed nearly 308,000 tourists from February 6-12, up 17 percent against the same period last year. Of the sum, 85,000 are foreigners, a year-on-year rise of 63 percent, mostly from the Republic of Korea (RoK), China, Japan, France and Taiwan (China). The guests brought 984 billion VND (roughly 44.3 million USD) for the municipal tourism industry, an increase of 4 percent over the corresponding time last year. Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam (the Temple of Literature), Ngoc Son Temple and Huong (Perfume) Pagoda are the most attractive destinations during Tet. The Temple of Literature alone served about 150,000 visitors during the first five days of the Lunar New Year (February 8-12). Cam Ranh Bay
Travellers have been keeping an eye on Cam Ranh Bay as a possible future destination for years now, and on our visit we were greeted by a magnificent, absolutely enormous bay, filled with turquoise waters and rimmed with green hills - it wasnt hard to see the potential of the spot. Cam Ranh Bay has had its 15 minutes in Vietnams maritime history. Considered to be one of the finest deep-water harbours in the world, the bay has been used both in peace and war time by the French, Americans and the Russians. Yet when all the boys and their toys packed up and left, the bay retreated back to a simpler existance and today most of the boat traffic is limited to small fishing vessels, nary an aircraft carrier in sight. The bay was once ringed with white sand beaches, but locals obviously not of the sunbaking variety - long ago dug fish farms into much of it.
