WALKERTON – For the better part of a century, the chimney at the Bogdon and Gross furniture factory stood, a monument to the Walkerton area’s industrial heyday. Even weeks after the building that surrounded the hundred-plus-foot stack came down, it remained a landmark. On Thursday, April 8, a team of demolition people came in to take down the chimney. By Friday morning, holes had been drilled in the towering structure, and a piece of it had been cut away, for all the world like a massive tree about to be felled. Everything was in place – the path had been mapped out, equipment was at the ready and a plan of action was ready to be executed. The 220kV transformer station in Thuy Nguyen district , Hai Phong city (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s National Power Transmission Corporation ( EVNNPT ) put into operation its first digital transformer station in Thuy Nguyen district, the northern port city of Hai Phong on April 19. The 210kV station was built at the total cost of more than 348 billion VND (15 million USD) on an area of some 40,100 square metres spanning Dong Son and Kenh Giang communes. According to EVNNPT Deputy General Director Luu Viet Tien, the station helped cut around 80 percent of the amount of copper cable, slash copper cable transport and installation costs, while reducing the risks of incidents caused by cable damage. Vietnamese businesses look to further optimise opportunities from CPTPP After two years of implementing the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the use of the deal to generate benefits for the economy and businesses has remained modest, according to insiders. Among 14 free trade agreements (FTAs) Vietnam has signed, the CPTPP is a new generation FTA with high standards and the highest level of facilitation. Vietnam has been forecast to be one of the members that benefits the most from the deal. However, the country has experienced challenges in optimising the FTA because of its modest level of development and competitiveness. Due to US-China trade tensions and the impact of COVID-19, the global economy fell into crisis last year with interrupted supply chains. Vietnam also suffered an economic downturn.
