Joe Biden’s SEC chair nominee signals more regulation for cryptocurrencies

· March 3, 2021 ·

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission appears likely to work on its first guidelines for cryptocurrencies after President Joe Biden 's nominee to lead the agency promised to provide "guidance and clarity" to the rapidly evolving market. Speaking during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday, Gary Gensler offered the first thoughts on handling cryptocurrencies if he is confirmed to lead the top U.S. markets regulator. " Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies brought new thinking to payments but raised new issues of investor protection we still need to attend to," Gensler told lawmakers, describing them as "catalysts for change." As SEC chairman, he would promote the new technology while ensuring investor protections, he said. The SEC has not adopted rules specifically tailored to cryptocurrencies and how they should be treated by people and companies, which some argue has created an unclear rulebook. "It's important for the SEC to provide … [Read more...] about Joe Biden’s SEC chair nominee signals more regulation for cryptocurrencies

· March 1, 2021 ·

AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Public Utilities Commission of Texas Chair DeAnn Walker resigned Monday, March 1, effectively immediately. Calls for her resignation came during hearings last week, following the failure of Texas’ power grid during the winter storms which left about four million Texans without power for days during the coldest temperatures in decades. Dude, it’s rude! UK student designs chair to stop ‘manspreading’

· July 12, 2019 ·

LONDON: A British student who built a chair designed to force men to sit with their knees together said on Thursday (Jul 11) she hopes her work will encourage men to stop invading women's space. Laila Laurel, 23, created the furniture to raise awareness of "manspreading", where men sit with their knees splayed wide apart on public transport or other cramped spaces, encroaching on their neighbour's space. "Manspreading is so infuriating because it is quite minor ... but it actually does affect women every day, all over the world, all the time and it infringes on their space," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "What my aims were for this chair were just to engage people in the idea and have people sit on it and raise some awareness and start conversations." The chair, meant to reverse typical gender norms, is shaped with a wedge that narrows towards the front, forcing the user to keep their knees together. Another chair she built for women widens out and features a … [Read more...] about Dude, it’s rude! UK student designs chair to stop ‘manspreading’

Chair of France’s climate council says Canada needs 2025 target, stronger net-zero advisory body

· March 3, 2021 ·

A prominent French-Canadian scientist who chairs France’s High Council on Climate says Canada needs to commit to a 2025 carbon pollution reduction target and strengthen its net-zero advisory body. Originally from Canada, Corinne Le Quéré is an accomplished researcher who is a professor of climate change science at the University of East Anglia and a member of the U.K.’s Climate Change Committee. She has worked at Princeton University, the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, and the British Antarctic Survey. Le Quéré has led a new scientific analysis of global emissions, published March 3 in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Climate Change, that found global pollution cuts need to increase tenfold to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement — a signal that much greater ambition is needed from many countries around the world. The analysis, “Fossil CO2 emissions in the post-COVID era,” points out that Canada is one of 150 countries where emissions increased between 2016, after … [Read more...] about Chair of France’s climate council says Canada needs 2025 target, stronger net-zero advisory body
