Next to the M56, on the outskirts of Manchester, the future has landed. A cluster of huge distribution centres sits at the heart of Airport City, a new development part-funded by the Beijing Construction Engineering Group (two years ago, it was visited by president Xi Jinping of China). Among the biggest buildings is one of Amazon’s self-styled “fulfilment centres”. Known within the company as MAN1, it opened in September last year, but everything inside, from the chairs to the wall-mounted screens, looks as if it has just come out of a box. Deeper within the centre, beyond the reception area and meeting rooms, there is something else just as new: a great expanse of space behind a metal cage, where dozens of robots, finished in Amazon orange and each emblazoned with its own number, glide across the floor, gracefully avoiding collisions and sprinting to their next task. President Trump said the United States will increase tariffs on Chinese goods if the first step of a broader trade agreement isn’t reached.“If we don’t make a deal, we’re going to substantially raise those tariffs,” he said Tuesday in a speech to the Economic Club of New York. “They’re going to be raised very substantially. And that’s going to be true for other countries that mistreat us too.”China is “dying” to make a trade deal with the U.S., Trump said, adding that he’d sign it only if it’s good for American companies and workers. WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Tuesday offered a lengthy public defense of his economic record, saying his "America First" policies and the radical views of his potential Democratic opponents should guarantee his reelection. "You have no choice 'cuz the people we're running against are crazy. They're crazy," the president said. Speaking before the Economic Club of New York, the president insisted he was "close" to a partial trade deal with China. But in response to a question, he said that he was prepared to punish Beijing with still higher tariffs if the talks stalled. The U.S. levies tariffs on $360 billion in Chinese products and is scheduled to hit all remaining imports - including popular consumer goods - starting Dec. 15. A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for clarification. The president's campaign-style remarks, in the same midtown Hilton Hotel ballroom … [Read more...] about Trump defends his ‘America First’ economic policies
