In a surprise move, Twitter head Jack Dorsey announced Wednesday that Twitter will stop taking political advertisements on a platform-wide basis. In a series of Tweets, Dorsey explained his motivations to Twitter at large."We've made the decision to stop all political advertising on Twitter globally. We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought. Why? A few reasons…" he began, indicating with an emoji that a thread was about to ensue.Dorsey ultimately said that political ads remove options from his users, versus seeking out content or content creators on their own. "While internet advertising is incredibly powerful and very effective for commercial advertisers, that power brings significant risks to politics, where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions.""We considered stopping only candidate ads, but issue ads present a way to circumvent. Additionally, it isn't fair for everyone but candidates to buy ads for issues they want to push. … [Read more...] about Twitter Announces It Will Stop Taking Political Advertisements: ‘Political Message Reach Should Be Earned, Not Bought’
More than 4m plastic bottles a week could be prevented from littering streets and marine environments in Britain if authorities adopted the kind of deposit-return schemes that operate in at least a dozen other countries, according to new evidence. A report for the last parliament that was never published suggests there could be a dramatic reduction in the number of bottles littered if people paid a deposit that would be refunded if they returned used bottles. Dominic Hogg, chairman of the environmental consultants Eunomia, who produced the report for the environmental audit committee, said: “We need to address the significant impact of litter in the UK and to cut down on the sources of plastic entering the marine environment. “A growing number of private companies are getting the message that it’s not good for business to be a brand that despoils the beaches and pollutes the oceans,” he said. “A deposit scheme will generate higher quantities of material of … [Read more...] about Could a money-back scheme clean up the UK’s plastic bottle plague?
Around 20 climate change protesters have seriously disrupted operations at one of the UK's new generation of gas-fired power stations at West Burton in Nottinghamshire. Police have made five arrests but overnight 11 protesters from the campaign group No Dash for Gas successfully scaled the middle of the plant's 91m (300ft) metal chimneys – the plant's water cooling towers – and another six have occupied a second one which was not yet in use, securing themselves on ledges. One of the group tweeted exuberantly with accompanying pictures: "Guess where we woke up this morning! Dawn sun shining on other chimney where friends are perched on the ledge." Speaking from the group's makeshift but sophisticated camp slung on the central chimney shortly before 1pm, one of them said: "We are settling in nicely. At the moment some of us are setting up a solar panel and there's a group fixing our portable loo. We've got a portable ledge lowered a short way down the flue with plenty of room … [Read more...] about Climate activists occupy West Burton gas power station

The European Investment Bank has agreed to phase out its multibillion-euro financing for fossil fuels within the next two years to become the world’s first ‘“climate bank”. The bank will end its financing of oil, gas, and coal projects after 2021, a policy that will make the EU’s lending arm the first multilateral lender to rule out financing for projects that contribute to the climate crisis. The decision will stem a multibillion euro flow of capital into new fossil fuel projects, and has been welcomed by green groups as an important step towards the EU’s aim to be carbon-neutral by 2050. The EIB described its decision as a “quantum leap” in ambition. “Climate is the top issue on the political agenda of our time,” the bank’s president, Werner Hoyer, said. “We will stop financing fossil fuels and launch the most ambitious climate investment strategy of any public financial institution anywhere,” Hoyer added. … [Read more...] about European Investment Bank to phase out fossil fuels financing
