The civil rights-era drama "The Help" took home the best ensemble cast in a motion picture, one of the top honors presented at the 18th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Sunday. "The Help," a DreamWorks/Touchstone adaptation of the Kathryn Stockett novel exploring racism in south of the United States in the 1960s, garnered the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, or the guild's equivalent to the Academy Award's top prize. In addition, a pair of separate honors were won by Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis, two of the drama's main actresses. "The Artist," the Weinstein Co.'s black-and-white silent film homage that was widely regarded as the top contender in the leadup to the 84th Academy Awards, claimed only one award, the best actor for Jean Dujardin. "Thank you, it's too much," a visibly moving Dujardin said backstage after beating out Hollywood favorite George Clooney of "The Descendants" to claim the honor. "The Artist," meanwhile, remains a … [Read more...] about “The Help” takes top honor at Screen Actors Guild Awards

Film, TV actors honor Dick Van Dyke with lifetime award
The Screen Actors Guild, which represents film, television and other performers in the United States, on Tuesday said it will give its lifetime achievement award to Dick Van Dyke at its annual awards ceremony in January 2013. The honor comes one year after Van Dyke's co-star, Mary Tyler Moore, on 1960s TV program "The Dick Van Dyke" show was awarded the Screen Actors Guild's (SAG-AFTRA) lifetime honor. "Dick is the consummate entertainer - an enormously talented performer whose work has crossed nearly every major category of entertainment," SAG-AFTRA co-president Ken Howard said in a statement. Van Dyke, 86, has won numerous awards over the years for his work on TV, Broadway, film and in music with a wide range of performances that include the movie classic "Mary Poppins," the stage and film version of "Bye Bye Birdie" and his "Dick Van Dyke" show, which was a groundbreaking TV comedy in its day. Dujardin, largely unknown outside of France until "The Artist," became the toast of film festivals and started racking up awards last year for his moving, virtually silent portrayal of a dashing actor struggling with Hollywood's transition from silent to talking pictures. Dujardin, 39, is the first French actor to win a best actor Oscar and the first to be nominated since Gerard Depardieu in 1990. French actress Marion Cotillard won the best actress Academy Award in 2008 for "La Vie en Rose." Meanwhile Frenchman Michel Hazanavicius won the Oscar for best directing for "The Artist." The silent, black-and-white movie focuses on a dashing film star, whose career suffers because he fails to embrace the talkies, and his romance with a rising young female dancer. It was Hazanavicius' first Oscar nomination and his … [Read more...] about Jean Dujardin wins best actor Oscar for ‘The Artist’
