The ancient town of Hoi An in central Vietnam has decided to celebrate International Happiness Day by making at least some people happy: those who were born on the same day. The local culture and tourism center has decided to offer free entrance tickets and gifts to any visitors who were born on March 20, which this year falls on Monday. Tourists simply have to present their identification papers, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper quoted the center officials as saying. The city will also hold an exhibition at the An Hoi crossroads displaying pictures taken by local photographers to give visitors a glimpse of life in Hoi An and the pursuit of happiness. There will be musical performances on Monday night near the 400-year-old Japanese Bridge with a theme of love and happiness, the center said. Joe Ruelle, a Canadian who has lived in Ha Noi for eight years, has turned his love for the city into a humorous song. The idea for the song came on a winter’s afternoon when a group of Westerners decided to contribute to the city’s 1,000-year anniversary celebrations. They wanted it to be casual and, most importantly, fun since anniversaries can get heavy. After a few months, they ended up with an old-style pop song with a catchy melody and cheeky Ha Noi references, Ha Noi Boogie. "I wanted the song to have a real doo-wop feel yet be dripping with references only those with some connection to Ha Noi would pick up on. I think it works; it’s fun, which was the whole point," Joe said. The famous Central Highlands resort town of Da Lat commenced celebrating its 115th birthday Wednesday with a cultural festival. The five-day festival features many activities including exhibitions, art performances and sports competitions. The Da Lat government said it would hold a vegetable festival to showcase various kinds of fresh vegetables grown in the area. Also opened Wednesday was an exhibition named Da Lat xua va nay (Da Lat Now and Then) by the famous Xuan Huong Lake. The exhibit features pictures, relics and documents which tell the 115-year history of Da Lat since it was founded by bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin in 1893. Visitor Phan Thi Thanh Loan said the exhibit helped her verify the stories her grandparents told her about the town.
