Long before Andrew Lohse became a pariah at Dartmouth College , he was just another scarily accomplished teenager with lofty ambitions. Five feet 10 with large blue eyes and the kind of sweet-faced demeanor that always earned him a pass, he grew up in the not-quite-rural, not-quite-suburban, decidedly middle-class town of Branchburg, New Jersey, and attended a public school where he made mostly A’s, scored 2190 on his SATs and compiled an exhaustive list of extracurricular activities that included varsity lacrosse, model U.N. (he was president), National Honor Society, band, orchestra, Spanish club, debate and – on weekends – a special pre-college program at the Manhattan School of Music, where he received a degree in jazz bass. He also wrote songs; gigged semiprofessionally at restaurants throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut; played drums for a rock band; chased, and conquered, numerous girls; and by his high school graduation, in 2008, had reached the pinnacle of … [Read more...] about Confessions of an Ivy League Frat Boy: Inside Dartmouth’s Hazing Abuses

DR Congo still gripped with violence despite new government
Violence has once again escalated in the cities of Goma, Beni and Butembo in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo). A group of young people destroyed houses and shops and torched car tires to show their anger with the United Nations' (UN) blue helmets, who are part of the ongoing MONUSCO peacekeeping mission, alongside the Congolese army and the police. The combined security forces appear to have proved incapable of protecting the population from marauding gangs and militias in the region. In the past few weeks, rebel attacks have risen sharply. According to the UN, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), affiliated with the so-called Islamic State, have killed more than 200 people since the beginning of the year and forced another 40,000 to flee their homes. Now the patience of many young people is wearing thin. They have taken to shouting slogans directed at security forces, such as: "You have failed miserably," "you do not protect the civilian … [Read more...] about DR Congo still gripped with violence despite new government

Stuff ' netball writers Brendon Egan and Andrew Voerman tackle some of the hot topics ahead of the 2021 competition. 1. Much has been made of Caitlin Bassett's move to New Zealand. What are you expecting from the Australian shooting veteran? Brendon Egan: The 32-year-old might not be the dominant force she was several years ago, but Bassett should still rack up the goals and be a handful for rival defences. Brought up in Vredendal, a small town three hours drive from Cape Town, the 25-year-old Central Pulse midcourter decided to follow in the footsteps of Irene van Dyk and Leana de Bruin, two players who went on to enjoy successful international careers after relocating from South Africa to New Zealand. Her mother actually emailed de Bruin, who replied with some words of encouragement, before Burger packed her bags at 18 and jetted off to Wellington, a city she has called home since her move in 2012. She stayed with extended family who she had never actually met and joined a club in Lower Hutt. But it has been a long road to get to where she is now. In fact, it took six years of slogging away in the amateur ranks before Burger finally reached the ANZ Premiership. It then took another year on the sidelines, watching and learning, before breaking through as a regular … [Read more...] about Karin Burger’s journey to the Central Pulse WD bib a seven year process
