The Big Read: Singapore’s political succession goes beyond finding the next Prime Minister

· May 1, 2018 ·

SINGAPORE: Political junkies eagerly awaiting the latest Cabinet line-up, which was announced earlier this week, were left with not much to chew on, as far as reading the tea leaves on who the next Prime Minister could be was concerned. Majority of the changes involved the less senior political officeholders — with Senior Ministers of State and Parliamentary Secretaries swopping portfolios or getting promoted for example — with all but one government ministry involved in the reshuffle, as the ranks of the fourth-generation leadership were boosted . PM Lee Hsien Loong, 66, has said he would not wish to be Prime Minister beyond 70 years old. With just four years to go before PM Lee turns 70, there is some public anxiety over the uncertainty of the identity of his successor. Three frontrunners have emerged: Mr Chan Chun Sing, 48, Mr Heng Swee Keat, 57 and Mr Ong Ye Kung, 48. How a stylist tailored a fashion designer’s outdated Singapore home for the 21st century

· March 5, 2021 ·

Traditional cheongsams can be exquisite expressions of elegance, but their limitations are clear to anyone who has worn one: they are restrictively narrow in parts, oppressively warm in humid climes and overly formal for everyday life. The same could have been said about the house that former scientist Ee-ling Fock and her radiologist husband, Eric Ting, bought in the central Singapore suburb of Novena in 2018. The outdated home, she realised, could be tailored for the 21st century, just as she had artfully modernised the Chinese dress for her home-grown fashion label, The Missing Piece. Built in 1997, the three-storey corner terrace house they had lucked upon was graced with good bones and towering cathedral ceilings – a prerequisite for Fock. But it was dark, with an entrance leading directly into the lounge room that narrowed the living area and made it almost inhospitable. Additionally, the bathrooms were oddly disproportionate to their respective bedrooms and not at all … [Read more...] about How a stylist tailored a fashion designer’s outdated Singapore home for the 21st century

‘Look at where debt has gone’: MAS chief warns of 3 shifts in global financial risks

· November 7, 2018 ·

SINGAPORE: While the fault lines of the last global financial crisis have been mostly addressed, risks remain and have shifted in three ways over the past 10 years, said the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s (MAS) managing director Ravi Menon on Wednesday (Nov 7). These can be seen in the build-up of leverage in emerging market economies, the shift of leverage from banks to non-banks and an increase in corporate bond issuances globally, said Mr Menon as he warned of the possibility of another global financial meltdown. “There will be another financial crisis. We have not banished financial crisis, but it’s going to look very different from the last one,” he said at a panel discussion held on day two of the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore. Moderated by Bloomberg Opinion columnist Clive Crook, the 40-minute long discussion also included Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and former US Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen giving their takes on monetary … [Read more...] about ‘Look at where debt has gone’: MAS chief warns of 3 shifts in global financial risks

Spotting UFOs: Do-it-yourself sky surveillance comes online

· March 4, 2021 ·

If you are perplexed, befuddled and bewildered about reports of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) and possible visitations of alien spacecraft, you can take action with do-it-yourself sky-monitoring gear. Given the low cost and high capability of today's consumer-grade technology, you too can be at the ready to document out-of-the-ordinary events. Enter the world of Sky Hub, a global network of smart sensors designed to snag digital signatures of anomalous events. This crowd-sourced network of smart trackers with "edge processing" uploads data of unusual phenomena to a Sky Hub Cloud. The driving forces empowering the Sky Hub initiative center on the rapid growth and evolution of machine learning for streamlining the analysis of large datasets and the increasing affordability of artificial intelligence (AI)-ready hardware. These advancements can be harnessed to probe the ongoing, baffling behavior of UAP and unidentified flying objects (UFOs) reportedly crisscrossing … [Read more...] about Spotting UFOs: Do-it-yourself sky surveillance comes online
