‘Super-cold winter’: COVID-19 could be knockout blow for Hong Kong’s tourism, retail sectors

· February 18, 2020 ·

HONG KONG: Tom Bennell's olive oil distribution business took a heavy beating during months of protests that emptied Hong Kong hotels and restaurants, his major customers. Now he fears a knockout blow as the city fights the coronavirus. The two-decade-old Olives and Oils supplies more than 20 five-star hotels, as well as clubs, delis and restaurants in Chinese-ruled Hong Kong, where retail and tourism act like balance wheels for an economy running on trade and finance. The coronavirus, which has killed more than 1,800 people across the border in mainland China and one of 60 patients in Hong Kong , has reduced tourist arrivals to a trickle and kept residents away from shops at a time when the city is mired in its first recession in a decade. Business is so bad that Bennell has pulled his two teenage sons out of international school to cut costs. If things don't turn around, he might be forced to leave the city that has been home since 1993. US clampdown on European travel heaps new COVID-19 woes on airlines

· March 12, 2020 ·

LOS ANGELES: A clampdown on European travel to the United States will heap more pressure on airlines already reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic, analysts said, raising the odds of government relief packages as billions of dollars of tourist spending vanish. The 30-day curbs from Friday (Mar 13), which exclude Britain, Ireland and other countries outside the European Schengen passport-free travel area, are similar to those that went into effect targeting China on Feb 1. They come after the outbreak's rapid spread across the European continent and in the United States. Combined with a fresh US State Department advisory asking citizens to reconsider the need to travel globally, the move could create chaos at dozens of airports across Europe as passengers attempt a last-minute rush to fly to the United States before the ban takes effect. Flights from Europe can still operate to a limited number of US airports with enhanced screening under measures announced on Wednesday evening. … [Read more...] about US clampdown on European travel heaps new COVID-19 woes on airlines

Visitors vanish from Asia’s most visited sites

· March 9, 2020 ·

SIAM REAP: As dawn breaks the unmistakable tapered towers of Angkor Wat emerge from the gloom - but for once there are no tourists jostling on its steps to capture Cambodia's most famous sunrise. Asia's most Instagrammable sites - temples, promenades, shopping streets, museums and mausoleums - are empty, victims of a virus keeping visitors at home. The usual crowds have evaporated from Sensoji temple in Tokyo to Shanghai's Bund; abandoning the viewpoint at The Peak in Hong Kong and alleviating the pedestrian crush along Sydney Harbour. Many of the now vanished visitors are from China - a country whose travellers have completely reshaped the tourist economies of Asia over the last few years, yet where only around 10 per cent of the population hold passports. At the Angkor Wat complex, a 12th century marvel of Khmer architecture whose unique crenellations and reliefs lure millions each year, high season has brought the lowest number of tourists on record. Chinese-speaking … [Read more...] about Visitors vanish from Asia’s most visited sites

Why charges are needed to help pay for T5: Changi Airport Group chairman Liew Mun Leong

· April 1, 2018 ·

SINGAPORE: There is no doubt that Liew Mun Leong has had an illustrious career. The current chairman of Changi Airport Group (CAG) was also the founding President and CEO of CapitaLand Group, a public listed real estate company, between 1996 and 2012. At 72, you might think that he would look back on his achievements and decide it is time to call it a day. But he famously says in practically every interview that he does not believe in retirement. He tells me the same thing, “For sure, you will turn senile if you stop doing work.” His statement is influenced by what happened to his late father. Mr Liew and his brother felt that they could provide for their father and persuaded him to retire at 67 from his job as a lathe machinist. His father, he says, became senile, declined and passed on. Mr Liew clearly regrets this. Hence, in addition to his chairmanships at CAG, Surbana Jurong and Pavilion Gas, he is Provost Chair and Professor (Practice) pro bono at NUS Business … [Read more...] about Why charges are needed to help pay for T5: Changi Airport Group chairman Liew Mun Leong
