Excited Brits braved snow and ice for the aisles of JD Sports, Primark and TK Maxx on Monday, as months of shopping restrictions came to an end in England. In towns and cities, eager spenders queued from midnight for pints while others waited in line for a haircut at dawn, as barbers and salons pulled up their shutters. It sent footfall figures rocketing, with the number of people on the high street up 218% by 9am. Springboard, which records spending data, said shopping centre visitors had risen by 340%. Across the high street, consumers are tipped to blow £1billion in the next 24 hours as England’s economy reopens. An estimated 12million people are set to go shopping as many take advantage of 10pm closing times. On twitter, people shared queues outside Primark, TK Maxx and JD Sports as crowds gathered in the thousands. TV viewing distance: how far away should you sit?
What is the perfect TV viewing distance? Britain’s daily Covid deaths HALVE in a week with 13 more victims – while cases go up by 29% to 3,568
Britain's daily Covid deaths have halved in a week — while infections have risen slightly, official figures revealed today. Department of Health chiefs posted 13 more lab-confirmed victims after recording just seven yesterday — which was the first time the daily fatality count was in single figures since September. For comparison, 26 deaths were registered on Easter Monday. Government statisticians today also added another 3,568 positive tests to the official tally, up 29 per cent on last week's figure of 2,762. The rise may be explained by the fact last week was Easter Sunday. Experts have previously noted testing numbers dip on public holidays due to the way swabs are recorded and because fewer people come forward for them. There is also a chance the uptick has been caused by No10's easing of restrictions on March 29. Academics have warned cases will inevitably rise when restrictions are eased but because millions of people have been vaccinated against the coronavirus, the … [Read more...] about Britain’s daily Covid deaths HALVE in a week with 13 more victims – while cases go up by 29% to 3,568
Happy Customers & Sad Business Owners: Why Are English Pubs Unhappy About Easing of Lockdown?
Residents of England are expected to flock pubs and cafes next week following four months of lockdown, with businesses reporting record bookings. The development seems to be good news for the economy, which have suffered enormous losses due to the coronavirus pandemic . However, business owners are unhappy about the upcoming flood of customers. "We think roughly one third of pubs will open on Monday, and perhaps only a third of those will be profitable. The idea that 'the pubs are opening, therefore everything is now OK' couldn't be further from the truth", said James Calder, chief executive of the Society of Independent Brewers, which represents 830 independent craft breweries across Britain. © AP Photo / Frank Augstein The window of The Rutland Arms pub shows their opening date in Hammersmith, London, Wednesday, April 7, 2021.
