I’ve lost count how many hotels I’ve stayed in. Hundreds, for sure, and on every continent except Antarctica. From beach-side resorts in St Kitts to a grand, soaring high-rise in Tokyo, to a castle-adjacent treehouse on the north coast of Scotland, I’ve stayed in some truly lovely places. Over the years I’ve come up with a set of tips and tricks I use in every hotel, from 5-star to wear-your-shoes-in-the-bathroom-star. They range from a little peace of mind and a reduction of annoyance to maintaining a bit of safety and health while traveling. 1. THE REMOTE IS GROSS What is touched by everyone but rarely cleaned? A quick swipe with some baby wipes or a damp (not wet) hand towel should help a bit. 2. 68 DEGREES FARENHEIT IS 20 DEGREES CENTIGRADE Need to set the thermostat in your room but you’re confused? … [Read more...] about Do you really need that small shampoo bottle? 10 hotel tips from a frequent traveller

UK envoy said Trump ditched Iran deal to spite Obama: Report
LONDON: Britain's ambassador to Washington believed US President Donald Trump pulled out of the Iranian nuclear deal because it was associated with his predecessor Barack Obama, leaked documents showed on Saturday (Jul 13). "The administration is set upon an act of diplomatic vandalism, seemingly for ideological and personality reasons - it was Obama's deal," ambassador Kim Darroch wrote in a diplomatic cable in May 2018. The cable was included in a second batch of leaked reports published by the Mail on Sunday newspaper, the first of which caused Darroch to resign earlier this week. In a cable sent afterwards, Darroch indicated there were divisions in Trump's team over the decision, and criticised the White House for a lack of long-term strategy. "They can't articulate any 'day-after' strategy; and contacts with State Department this … [Read more...] about UK envoy said Trump ditched Iran deal to spite Obama: Report

HONG KONG: Violent clashes broke out in Hong Kong on Wednesday (Jun 12) as police tried to stop protesters storming the city's parliament, while tens of thousands of people blocked key arteries in a show of strength against government plans to allow extraditions to China. Police used rubber bullets, tear gas, pepper spray and batons to disperse crowds of black-clad demonstrators - most of them young people and students - calling for authorities to scrap the Beijing-backed law. The city's police chief said the protests were "a riot situation", and warned the public to avoid the Admiralty area. Ambulances were seen heading towards the protest area. More than 10 people were wounded in the clashes, Cable TV reported. Clashes broke out shortly after 3pm - the deadline protesters had given for the government to abandon the controversial bill. Rows of riot police were quickly outnumbered by protesters - many wearing face masks, helmets or goggles - who gathered in … [Read more...] about Hong Kong police fire tear gas, rubber bullets as clashes with protesters break out
