CDCs keep ‘low profile’ but are vital during crises, says PM Lee at swearing-in of mayors
SINGAPORE: Community Development Councils (CDC) often keep a low profile but their contributions are vital during times of crisis, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Wednesday (Sep 23). “CDCs often take a low profile, working quietly but steadily to fulfil their mission,” he said during a swearing-in ceremony for mayors of the five districts. “But in times of crisis, their contributions are vital, and become more apparent.” Ms Low Yen Ling, Ms Denise Phua and Mr Desmond Choo have been reappointed mayors of South West CDC, Central CDC and North East CDC respectively. Mr Alex Yam is mayor of North West CDC, taking over from Dr Teo Ho Pin who is Singapore's longest-serving mayor, having held the position for 19 years. China has rebuffed Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison's calls for an apology after its foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian posted the picture of an Australian soldier holding a bloodied knife to the throat of an Afghan child on Monday (Nov 30). China's embassy said the "rage and roar" from Australian politicians and media over the image was an overreaction. But other nations, including the United States, New Zealand and France, have expressed concern at the Chinese foreign ministry's use of the manipulated image on an official Twitter account. "The CCP's latest attack on Australia is another example of its unchecked use of disinformation and coercive diplomacy. Its hypocrisy is obvious to all," the US State Department said on Wednesday, adding that while China doctored images … [Read more...] about Backing Australia, US State Department says China hit ‘new low’ with doctored image

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries has announced the contours of carving out of its oil-to-chemicals (O2C) business into an independent unit with a USD 25 billion loan from the parent, as it looks to unlock value by selling stakes to global investors like Saudi Aramco. The reorganisation will enable the focused pursuit of opportunities across the O2C value chain, improve efficiencies through self-sustaining capital structure and a dedicated management team, and attract dedicated pools of investor capital, according to a company presentation filed with the stock exchanges. The O2C business unit holds Reliance's oil refinery and petrochemical assets and retail fuel business but not upstream oil and gas producing fields such as KG-D6 and textiles business. Once completed, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) -- the company founded by Dhirubhai Ambani in the late 1960s -- will house only the upstream oil and gas … [Read more...] about RIL to spin off oil-to-chemical biz into separate arm with $25bn loan
