You'd think that Monday's surprise meeting between Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and President Donald Trump might leave investors feeling shaken. After all, it's the first time the president and the nation's top monetary policymaker have had such a meeting since an informal dinner last February. And Trump has routinely attacked Powell since then, pressuring him to cut interest rates. His tweets have been shown to move markets. But though the dollar initially dropped —Trump tweeted that the "very good & cordial meeting" included a discussion of "dollar strength & its effect on manufacturing" — the currency has since bounced back, and US stocks are on track for another day of record highs. ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The state Health Department is holding public meetings in four New York regions with higher rates of cancer. The department did studies to identify factors contributing to cancer rates and determine the best approach to prevention and screening. The regions are in Erie, Warren and Suffolk counties and on Staten Island. The meeting schedule is online Investigators found Warren County had the highest rates of all cancers in the state. Contributing factors were smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity and HPV infection. A meeting is scheduled Nov. 7 at Adirondack Community College in Queensbury. The East Buffalo/Cheektowaga area was found to have elevated numbers of colorectal, kidney, prostate, oral, esophageal and lung cancers. Tobacco was noted as a contributing factor. Campaigners for female bishops are optimistic that the latest effort to bring women into the episcopate will find favour with the Church of England general synod when it meets in London this week, heralding a possible end to two decades of bitter and damaging conflict. The church has been under public and political pressure to introduce female bishops since the synod rejected previous legislation by just six votes almost exactly a year ago. Its failure to resolve the issue was described by the church's most senior civil servant as a "train crash", while David Cameron warned that the church needed "to get on with it". The house of bishops of the Church of England, which makes up a third of the General Synod, has decided to allow senior female clergy to attend and speak at its meetings until women are legally permitted to become bishops. The church's failure to vote in favour of the introduction of female bishops last November provoked fierce criticism in parliament and led one member of the synod to brand it a "train crash of epic proportions" for the C of E. In a bid to soothe the anger the issue has generated, the house of bishops established a 10-strong working group made up of members of all three houses – laity, bishops and clergy – which has held a number of meetings on the matter.
