In an interview Monday with our sister site Variety, a spokesperson for the Venice Film Festival (set to take place September 2-12) reiterated the stated intention of artistic director Alberto Barbera to keep the key awards-season launchpad on track, but not follow the path TIFF seems to be possibly considering if things go south. “The Venice Film Festival cannot be replaced by an online event. There is obviously the possibility that we use technology for some initiatives,“ but the spokesperson added it’s too early for this to be decided. Of course Italy, especially northern Italy, is among the hardest hit by coronavirus and, despite its status as a key player for Oscar hopefuls, might be a bridge too far for many contenders to feel comfortable making the trek even five months from now if the all-clear is called. It is hard to gauge since this is such unknown territory we are in; no Oscar season has had to deal with this kind of situation. If Venice … [Read more...] about Oscars: Academy Delays April Board Meeting; Key Fall Film Festivals Hope To Keep Lights On For Movie Awards Season

The pope is supreme arbiter of canon law. John Paul was passive on the abuse charges against Maciel, consistent with his failure to confront the larger clergy abuse crisis. Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Secretary of State was close to Maciel and received financial gifts from the Legion, as several priests told me for previous reporting. Sodano put pressure on Ratzinger to abort the case. But, in late 2004, when an ailing John Paul with five months to live, again celebrated Maciel at a Vatican ceremony, Ratzinger broke ranks and ordered an investigation, realizing that whomever the next pope might be, he shouldn’t inherit a cover-up. … [Read more...] about Did Second Most Powerful Man at Top Catholic Order Sexually Abuse Teenage Boy?
Related Story Harvey Weinstein Trial: Rosie Perez Testifies About Annabella Sciorra Rape Account I have known Harvey since the early ’90s when I had a front row seat watching him shape marketing campaigns and brilliant distribution strategies for his early indie films like sex, lies and videotape and The Crying Game to blockbusters like The English Patient and Shakespeare In Love. I ran an ad agency that handled the marketing for his Canadian distribution and I witnessed his steady demands and wild temper. He had his hands in everything from the box office to media buying, and you did not dare deviate from his vision. He could jump through the phone and tear your throat out in a split second. I recall several marketing meetings in the offices of the Canadian distributor where Harvey would call in and surgically tear an executive apart if the film did not deliver over the weekend. He would scream about the media buy being f*cked up or the screen selection not being … [Read more...] about Clashing With Harvey Weinstein On Two Docus Gives Barry Avrich Deja Vu Watching Aggressive Courtroom Cross-Examination Tactics: Guest Column

11:05 a.m. Physical distance compliance has helped curb impact in Santa Clara County: Santa Clara County now projects its coronavirus cases could be under 12,000 and as low as 2,500, down from earlier projections of 50,000, a number that might have been reached had officials taken no mitigation measures, county health officer Dr. Sara Cody told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday. Cody credited the stay-home orders in the Bay Area with helping reduce the expected case numbers as projected from current rates of infection. Cody cautioned that limited testing capacity limits the projections, as officials only count tests they have conducted and confirmed. “They are only estimates and lots of factors are in play,” Cody said. “Most important is our continued collective ability to maintain shelter in place.” Moving beyond shelter-in-place rules, she said, will occur only after officials ensure hospitals can care for patients’ full needs, increase testing abilities, … [Read more...] about Coronavirus live updates: California health worker infections more than double in six days
