Asian communities become scapegoats in New Zealand’s housing crisis

· September 16, 2019 ·

Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, consistently ranks among the world's 10 least affordable for housing in the annual Demographia International report. All three major cities in the country — Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington, the capital — are categorized as "severely unaffordable." As a result, smaller towns are seeing an influx of people who are relocating in the hopes of finding cheaper housing solutions, only to discover that the new demands have also caused real estate prices to rise in smaller towns. In Tauranga, a small northern coastal town with a population of 128,000, average property values have increased from NZ$304,000 (€176,000) to NZ$497,000 (€288,000) in the last five years. The Demographia report now ranks Tauranga among the least 10 affordable cities in the world along with Hong Kong, San Francisco and Vancouver. "It moved across the sky from east to west, heading towards Taupo," he said. Napier resident Simoné Du Buisson said it was visible from the suburb of Tamatea, posting a snap simply titled Something weird in the sky. ‘Between The Dope and The Weed’: New Zealand Politician Mocked in Parliament Over Cannabis Debate

· December 6, 2019 ·

New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has made MPs laugh by mocking politician Paula Bennett over the cannabis debate. The country is set to hold a referendum on legalising marijuana at the 2020 election. Earlier, Bennett asked Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern why there was a purchasing limit of 14 grams in the draft legislation on the legalisation of recreational cannabis.  During Question Time in parliament, Peters responded on behalf of the Prime Minister, using a printout of a meme that was available on social media, which showed two images of Bennett side by side, which made it look like she had consumed lots of cannabis. "Well, actually, I've got to say I have an example of the kind of amounts that are in other countries...In this case, it's very hard to tell the difference between the dope and weed," Peters said, holding up the meme.  "If the minister would like a picture of me for his wall he can just let me know," Bennet sarcastically replied. … [Read more...] about ‘Between The Dope and The Weed’: New Zealand Politician Mocked in Parliament Over Cannabis Debate
