Malaysian PM Mahathir sparks controversy over anti-Semitic remarks at Cambridge University

· June 18, 2019 ·

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has once again sparked controversy over his anti-Semitic views while on a working visit to the United Kingdom, with his remarks drawing the ire of local Jewish students. “I have some Jewish friends, very good friends, they are not like the other Jews, that’s why they are my friends,” Dr Mahathir reportedly said at the Cambridge Union debating society on Sunday (Jun 16). His remarks were said to have been followed by laughter from the audience, prompting a sharp response from the Jewish student community. “I have some Jewish friends, very good friends. Preetipls, Subhas Nair ‘unconditionally apologise’ for rap video after MHA criticises ‘insincere apology’

· August 3, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: YouTuber Preetipls, whose real name is Preeti Nair, and her brother Subhas said on Saturday (Aug 3) they "unconditionally apologise for the tone, aggression, vulgarities, and gestures" used in a controversial rap video they created to criticise a NETS E-Pay advertisement . "We have apologised but we understand that more needs to be said and done," the siblings said in a statement posted on Facebook. "People are offended and we sincerely apologise for it. If we could do it again, we would change the manner in which we approached the issue, and would have worded out thoughts better," they said. Their statement - the second this week - comes a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs criticised their original statement on Friday as "a mock, insincere apology " spoofing an earlier apology issued by Havas Worldwide for the e-payment ad. In the e-pay ad, actor and deejay Dennis Chew, who is Chinese, was dressed up as four characters, including a Malay woman and an … [Read more...] about Preetipls, Subhas Nair ‘unconditionally apologise’ for rap video after MHA criticises ‘insincere apology’

The Big Read: Strides made, but some way to go for Government to quench thirst for data

· July 15, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: From population and employment figures to white papers, government data was vital in getting business at Caregiver Asia off the ground. The online platform, launched in 2015, links freelance caregiving professionals to those who need their services. Chief executive officer Yeo Wan Ling said it used population statistics to find out where elderly people live in Singapore, to deploy freelance carers where their services are needed most. Through white papers and figures from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the labour movement, the firm also found out that many freelancers were not protected by legal agreements or work-injury-compensation insurance. It then set out to develop products to plug these gaps in the market, Ms Yeo said. Indeed, the availability of public data, coupled with breakneck advances in technology, has made once tortuous tasks - such as finding a freelance nurse, part-time cleaner or even a home - much easier these days. Violence mars end of huge Hong Kong protest against China extradition

· June 10, 2019 ·

HONG KONG: A huge peaceful protest in Hong Kong against controversial plans to allow extraditions to the Chinese mainland descended into violence early on Monday (Jun 10) as police fought running battles with small pockets of demonstrators. Organisers said more than a million people took part in the Sunday march - the largest protest since the Hong Kong's 1997 handover to China - confronting the city's pro-Beijing leadership with a major political crisis. The Snorer, the Stinker and the Seat Kicker – 10 worst people to be seated with on a plane

· September 21, 2019 ·

The sky outside was dark, the cabin lights were dim and I had just fallen into a state of merciful slumber. Suddenly, there was a loud and agitated commotion. A guy with a blanket draped over him was stumbling up the aisle. “He’s sleepwalking!” one of his friends cried. “Quick, follow him!” They then proceeded to troop around the plane, trailing blankets and socks, preventing everyone else from sleeping while the sonambulist himself remained inexplicably dead to the world. True story. READ: The Princess, The Influencer and other friends you don't want to travel with Then there was the time when a toddler decided to interrupt the gentle engine humming of a tranquil plane by loudly chanting, “Plane is noisy! Plane is noisy! Plane is noisy!” for a good half hour, while his father, understanding the concept of irony but not that of consideration for others, encouraged him by chuckling in amusement. Being on a plane is usually not the most comfortable of experiences, but if … [Read more...] about The Snorer, the Stinker and the Seat Kicker – 10 worst people to be seated with on a plane
