Though young writers, particularly who have been engaged in online literature, have yet to secure a firm foothold in Vietnam’s orthodox literary field or gain critical acclaim from their traditional, older predecessors, they have undeniably aroused a fresh, intriguing wave and enjoyed a great number of young followers. German conductor to perform in Hanoi Famous German conductor Jonas Alber will join the Viet Nam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO) in a special concert to be held at the Hanoi Opera House on March 9-10. Some pieces of music from Mozart’s the Magic Flute, Beethoven’s Fidelio and Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman will be performed at the concert with the participation of tenors Nguyen Anh Vu and Trinh Thanh Binh, sopranos Ha Pham Thang Long and Dao To Loan, mezzo-sopranos Le Thi Vanh Khuyen and Ngo Huong Diep and basso Vu Manh Dung. Earlier in January 2010, the Goethe Institute invited the German conductor to perform with the VNSO Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 to open the German Year in Vietnam. Goethe-Institut Hanoi to host 'Street-Front Houses' exhibition The Goethe-Institut of Hanoi will host “Nha Mat Pho” (Street-front Houses), an exhibition of the work of artist Nguyen The Son, from March 8-28. Recently, Hanoi’s residential buildings, which have long shaped the face of the city, have been changing dramatically. Instead of windows and balconies, which facilitate the communication between neighbors, tall billboards now seal the houses off from the street. This exhibition reflects an aspect of the rapid transformation of Hanoi's architecture. Using paper and silk, this exhibition features photographic installations which play with the beholder’s perception and blur the line between reality and fiction; video installations are used to reflect the rapid change Hanoi has undergone over the past several years. Vietnamese stand in Sri Lanka attracts a large number of visitors The Vietnamese Embassy joins other countries and international organizations from India, Russia, the US, Japan, Malaysia and the UN in an exhibition in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka from February 4-7. This is the first time Vietnam has taken part in the event of this kind since the establishment of its embassy in the country in April last year. The Vietnamese stand shows video images of the country’s people and land, as well as lacquer products, souvenirs, and publications on bilateral ties. It has attracted great attention from visitors, including Sri Lanka Foreign Minister G.L Peiris. This is the biggest annual event on Sri Lanka’s development achievements to mark its National Day. A festival will be held to celebrate Northern Central Heritage Cultural Tourism Week at the Vietnam Exhibition Centre for Culture and Arts in Hanoi on November 21-23. Exhibitions on heritage of the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, as well as the city of Hanoi, will highlight the festival. Visitors will have opportunities to view photos of the Hue citadel and cultural events in Hue in the early 20th century, as well as enjoy demonstrations of calligraphy.
